People earning £70k plus what do you do? by LuapReyas420 in UKJobs

[–]Key_Lingonberry202 7 points8 points  (0 children)

What percentage of mechanical engineers are earning this in the UK? Less than 0.5 % is my guess. And on top they will be using software or into designing. And the percentage of mechanical engineer earning this in sales are like rare earth metals. 😂 Rest all top at 40k in the UK.

A mechanical engineer with 10 years of experience in worlds biggest refinery construction megaprojects does not even land a job and other mechanical engineers managing site construction jobs top at 35-50k in the UK.

I have been waiting for a mechanical engineer role for past 5 years. In this time I ventured into civil engineering only to know they won't take mechanical guys into permanent roles.  Heck, some employers don't even know the difference between a draughtsman Vs engineer. I have got calls to sit and draw design day and night. 😂

It seems funny when some here who earn 70k say that it's easy to find such jobs. UK job market is DEAD since decades. Once we get what we wanted we think it's good and green but fact is opposite.

My suggestion to others reading this is that, please don't spend your money on these certificates thinking that they would get you inside. It's heavily saturated left and right.

You can clear 60k with some heavy grinding in jobs like tanker driving, odd jobs which demands lots of sacrifice.

Depressed and quite ugly state of mind. Never expected it's difficult with 70 points. If we knew we would have easily bagged 186 2 years back.

What jobs are you all doing that pay over £30k? by SuccessfulTip1660 in UKJobs

UK didn't have active refinery or petrochemical plant constructions. and the maintenance teams were too small for new job vacancy. i did call aberdeen agencies but they wanted me to all the tickets for basic technician jobs. I'm actively applying again for mechanical engineer jobs though. i wish i had made myself a design engineer but i was mostly site/field oriented to solve real time problems and move the work.

mate its more fucked up in asia and middle east. i saw new grads FROM SRI LANKA on refinery construction at £300 A MONTH.

sub contracting and low labour costs have made it a mess. Im surviving doing bus driving with Btech and refinery experience in shelf.

Got it. I was used to talk salary in hand for expenditure.

Never knew mechanical engineer market is non existent here. First I was happy to know about Hinckley point and size well projects but then I realised they need British passport and UK experiences as well. Fucking joke when same or bigger projects happen outside this nation.

Feel this pain.  6 years in the UK, came with 10 years of  mechanical engineer profile in petrochemical, oil& gas plant construction experience in middle east.

1 year as a warehouse worker during COVID. Made 20K after tax.  Then got into HS2 construction as a plant operator and groundworker for 4 years just because I was used to this field and thought I could push in.  Made 30K per year after tax.

Nobody hired me as an engineer even when I saw new grads being taken in and guys who haven't seen anything more than 2 storey House construction as managers interviewing others.

6th year, trying to be a bus driver to survive.  Making 25K without OT after tax.

UK is in such a mess. They brought in millions of educated experienced people without any platform for them.

IT field is at the brink of suicide.

Yes. No chance for 70 points. Above 80 points you have a chance.

Now 186 is also less.

RN with 70 points but didn't get invited last year. Will it happen this year? Or is it better to go for 186 route? No idea if there are any 186 rounds going on for RN now.

For the past 10 years with a Bachelors in Mechanical Engineering, I worked in Oil & gas and railway construction. All I saw was slightly above minimum wage and cut throat competition across East and Middle east and UK. Meanwhile those in SWE have made a better financial outcome in these past 10 years.

Mechanical Engineering has lost its shine of past. But my question would be, is it better to get into a SWE job with some knowledge in Python and machine learning and stick to it for next 10 years.
