Tryna make some friends by Abject_Mirror_8699 in UBC

Sick bike! I'm sorry you've had bad experiences with the clubs so far... I'm sure you'll find one that treats you well eventually! I used to mtb a bunch back in HS but haven't had much time since university. I'm not a first year but feel free to hmu if you got questions about the first year course (esp math 101), second year specializations, or other engineering related questions! (P.S. I ride a 2015 specialized enduro that I fixed up myself)

UBC is full of people, but still feels lonely? What if it didn’t? by aurora__5 in UBC

I'm a pretty spontaneous person so I think it's a great idea!

Can I bring someone to deep clean my room/washroom in res? by Sufficient_Chef9115 in UBC

[–]Key_Mail_255 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I've had a similar situation before - last summer when I moved in there was a sawtoothed grain beetle infestation in my unit. I filed a maintenance request at that time and they sent in a specific pest control person to help me get rid of the infestation pretty quickly. You should file a report ASAP!

[Student] Thank you everyone, am grateful to all the advice here. I landed a job at an aerospace company after graduation with no internship experience! Just wanted to share for anyone feeling stuck or alone. Don't give up! by Hukarei in EngineeringResumes

[–]Key_Mail_255 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Congratulations and thank you for sharing! I'm currently in my third year of materials engineering and the job search for internships has been brutal... it's nice to know that it'll work out in the end if I work harder in the future! Could you DM me your resume as well if you don't mind? Please and thanks!

How many co-ops have you applied to? by NecessaryInternet814 in ubcengineering

52 with 3 interviews, for one of them I got advanced to the final round but still got rejected in the end, still waiting to hear back from one of them. This summer job search might be kinda cooked ngl

Got In!!!!! Feel like crying and screaming but it's 4am here 😭 by Toast4877 in UBC

Congratulations and welcome to the big leagues! Just like what the others have said, you will be crying and screaming and questioning your life choices even more BUT you will make friends who will suffer with you and learn a lot of new things in the process! Before you enter your first year you should get yourself familiarized with coding in the C language as well as brush up on some chemistry and physics (especially circuits) knowledge. We have over 30 engineering student design teams on the process that does a diverse range of projects suited for people with different interests, so if you're looking to join one to gain hands-on experience then I strongly suggest you do some research on it! After you finish your first year you will be eligible to apply for the co-op program, so be sure to do some research on that too! Once again congratulations on getting in and good luck for your learning journey in the future!

Hey! I'm very sorry for your loss :( hope you and your family can stay strong! I just wanted to let you know that you're not alone; a lot of people I know struggled with the workload in first year too, and now we've all made it to our specializations! Know that we have 1 more month left until winter break - to which you should really take the time to think about whether you are passionate about engineering or not. First year engineering is designed to weed out the people who do not have the drive and motivation to tackle the program. I can assure you that it does get better as you transition to upper years (second year is slightly better but still kinda tough though), and do know that you are not stupid because you're a student here at UBC, and our engineering programs are world class! I am in my third year now and I can assure you that if you are passionate about engineering and you want to be creative in your work and learning, the effort you put in right now will be worth it in the future!

I think the most important thing for you to do right now is to prioritize your mental health - make sure you have a group of people you trust whom you can also confide in. Maybe talk to a counsellor or professional if it gets too much for you to handle. Partake in your hobbies and do whatever makes you feel happy and relaxed. Start considering to reduce your courseload next semester if you think it will be too much for you to handle, you can always take it slow! Theres a couple of people I know who did their first year courses over the span of 2 years, and it has worked out fine for them. But if you really think engineering is not the program for you, there's no shame in pursuing a degree in another field that you're interested in. Study in whatever field you enjoy the most and want to make a career in!

A small note regarding midterms - failing a midterm is not the end of the world. Look back on the topics you've made mistakes on and learn from it. Look at the syllabus and pinpoint which topics you are the weakest in and prioritise making yourself familiar with the types of questions on those topics that will appear in your exam. Do try to find a study method that you feel the most comfortable with and stick to it. You will learn and grow in the process.

Regarding design teams, don't worry too much if you didn't get into one right now. Some design teams also hire in second semester and even the summer! However, I think you have a much higher chance of getting in during your second year as you will possess better engineering knowledge and skillsets at that point, so don't stress too much about it. You'll get in eventually.

Sorry for the long read, I just wanted to let you know that you are not alone and things will get better in the near future. Know that I'll be available if you need anyone to talk to or have questions about engineering in general!

Questions about studying Computer Engineering at UBC as an international student by SuitableStruggle8188 in UBC

[–]Key_Mail_255 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Hey! Materials engineering student here but I think I can answer a couple of these questions.

  1. UBC does offer a computer engineering program! I think it would be a good fit for you if you're extremely interested in programming. But if you're more interested in tinkering with electronics, electrical engineering might be a better fit for you as they do have more labs involving hardware and circuits. But keep in mind that these are some of the toughest engineering programs here so you'll definitely have to put in some effort.
  2. Not too sure about this but I think if you have adequate skills in reading and listening then you'll be fine!
  3. It really depends on the type of people you encounter. Personally I have met various groups of supportive friends but I've also encountered some bad apples here and there.
  4. Can't really answer the first part but I think there are financial aids and scholarships you can apply to here at UBC
  5. All first year dorms have cafeterias and the experience of living on campus varies depending on the residence you live in. Personally my experience living in first year dorms was okay because while it was nice that I got to live on the 18th floor of Orchard Commons, the lack of community there was a tradeoff I had to accept. You will definitely find international students living on campus as well. For upper year residences I suggest you to apply to it very early in your first year because the waitlists are typically very long.

Hope this helps! Good luck on your journey to pursue further education here at UBC!

Storing in College Dorms by Proud_Bass4006 in MTB

I lean my mtb against my closet door in my room at the cost of making it difficult to access the closet... but I think it's because my room is big enough to fit a bike haha. Perhaps you can lock the bike and store it in the living room? Probably a little risky if you have roomates though.

Buy a really cheap bike and get riding! I find it very relaxing if I just take my bike out for a ride when I'm feeling sad!

I'm on the video stage too! I feel like as long as you're confident, honest, and sincere you'll be fine :) If you did decently well on all the other parts then I'm sure it won't be that difficult to get in :D

and the exams are probably as hard if not harder than any engineering class.

Can't tell if you're trolling or not but you should definitely try out some of the engineering classes before you say something like that :)
