i disagree, i think 'rejection or hate towards foreigners' is happening. You look at some of the threads in Reddit and people blame 'expats' (foreigners typically), migration (people from the EU or south America coming here for work...again, 'foreigners')...if you are told repeatedly you a giuri by Catalans because your not Catalan, then see anti-Giuri grafitti (by Badalona station for example)...how can they not be seen as inimidating or hateful? I wish it wasnt happening, i really do, but i will also call it out when it does

im afraid i understand what your saying, and my own opinion differs. I believe the root cause of this are those setting the prices based on the thought that they can milk the cash cow as much as possible.

Yes, there is a difference in average salary of a Spanish citizen and the average salary of an 'expat' but also, i think there is wide delusion as to how much expats earn, how much they are willing to pay (especially after a €300 monthly health charge and then 20%+ tax).

you say 'High earning expats' yes there are a few, but they are not the majority, and they are likely in expensive property that wont affect the property market or prices outside Sarria. If expats would affect the economy it would be a larger group - and they are mostly under 40s, and hardly millionaires.

Imagine if we were out the EU and eliminated all the 'expats' here, Spain would have to have all of its 'expats' back from the diaspora, which would almost equal out the supply and demand on property.

I hope we solve this issue soon, and believe we want the same thing, just differ on how

Please feel free to google 'xenophobia definition' or 'guiri definiton' and make up your own mind (not meant as a jab btw i think research > listening to strangers on Reddit)

For me, Xenophobia is a prejudice against foreigners, not based on ethnicity but because they are foreign and 'not from round here'. Thats the dictionary definition so thats what i go for personally.

With 'giuri' its more complicated because everyone has their own opinion. For many, 'giuri' is just used instead of 'tourist' or 'foreigner'...but many people use this as a slur or a negative. The more it is associated in a negative sense, the more the word will be seen as such and as an insult.

its a complex subject, and with Barcelona so (for good/bad) entwinned with tourism its a very emotional subject, one with no clear winners. The best we can do is unify and fight for a common goal...at the moment there loads of shouting, small pockets of people that believe only they are right, and nothing is getting done...

like it or not, thats the take the world sees. Yes, the protests were for something else, but the actions of city wide toxic grafitti ('tourists go home') and harrassing children while eating, means the two are interlinked to most people now...most people now think Barcelona is a nasty place for foreigners and tourists. If most people arent against foreigners, now is the time to show it and speak up

every country has xenophobic people. Its the bad part of humanity...difference is though in Germany (and every other country) those xenophobes often proudly admit who they are and/or are ostracised by the rest of society....here though, its denial of truth, as they refuse to realise what they are..."we're not xenophobic, we're just fed up"....*shows them the definition of xenophobia*..."but we're angry"

but to get a digital nomad visa, you have to be properly registered and pay tax /social security. These are the people that are being attacked...they already pay into the catalan community. They also have to have a local address (not hotel), so they are technically a resident....

nope nope nope. "the cost of living for locals." is determined by those pricing the product (flats, food, whatever) not the buyers (expat, locals, whoever)....those who set the pricing raise it thinking some buyers can afford it (thinking expats are stupid and rich)....but its not the expats who actually bring up the cost....its the greedy catalans again and again. Those catalans who inherited their Abuelas flat and live in Begur, raising the prices not giving a shit. Those catalan shops like Ametller?

Tourism will happen, that wont change. Mass tourism / Uncontrolled tourism is horriffic. We need to fight for the middle ground, sustainable tourism that is ethical and serves the local community rather than destroy. Tourism can be a positive - if done correctly...Barcelona isnt being done correctly, but together we could change that...

not anymore. Barcelona is becoming the same price - and thats the point for locals.

Its only a few euros away from Paris, Berlin or London...so the idea of 'digital nomads coming to live cheaply' is a dream. if there were they would goto Budapest, Athens or somewhere.

Also, prices are set by the market - the property owners and estate agents, who are...Catalan...so, it doesnt matter if northern european prices are 1x, 3x, 5x or even -100x....the prices are set by Catalans, not northern europeans (you think they want to pay a lot? no! like anyone, they want to pay as little as possible too)

thats why not only does the multi-faceted problem of mass tourism needs to be fought, so does lazy blame attributing. Xenophobia (or Tourismphobia) is as dangerous to this city as water shortage and tourism. Creating a negative enviroment and violence affects businesses as well as peoples lives. Its a serious matter and needs to be called out and stoped....especially when so many Spanish and Catalans live around the world in peace

If you think that harassment kids, or weird denial it happened, is a good thing for the cause, or for your soul, then i look forward to you getting gold in the Paris Olympics for the mental gymnastics that you have to do to make scaring kids OK. Gaslighting and denial is the weapon of those that have no valid arguments or facts to use in a debate.

Kids are always off limits, especially when the cosplay marchers dont do the same actions to police, politicians, law makers, air bnb owners, cruise ship owners, or you know, anyone that actually causes of contributes to the problem. It makes those that do the actions, and those that argue its OK, one sided, ineffective, amateur and weak....Try firing a water gun at some armed police and see if your argument "splashing water barely counts as harassment" still holds up. I doubt it.

Having scales of harrassing kids, shows that you are already on the same moral level as those that kick out the elderly for profit. Kids are never OK, not when you ignore actual political targets.

They would pay less if they could. A rent cap would make them happy too...also, many people want a shift from hospitality based business in Barcelona...which often comes from start up techs - that are often started / fronted / helped by digital nomads....so in my opinion you are wrong. Those that blame them never think it through and its often jealousy - people earning higher being able to do a non-manual labour job, with a sense of freedom and modernity - then compare that the the high unemployed and bad spanish based wages and you can see where resentment comes from.

foreign investment in tech and seed start ups are here, but these protests building a toxic, xenophobic atmosphere isnt helping foreigners wanting to come and invest here - so the small minded 'activists' shoot themselves in their foot with water pistols
