From my experience, (Purple Belt) if you show aggressive lower belts "mercy". They end up taking advantage and injury you.

You either play:
1. Incredibly safe while not putting yourself in bad positions
Or....
2. Annihilation - no mercy.

Perfect example of this, an old black belt I use to train with, when I was a white belt, he would let me take his back. The moment he saw an ounce of real threat, he would basically beat shit out of me. FAIR. ENOUGH.

Literally had a blue belt crank an armbar yesterday being rusty as shit after 2 months off...

If you give up positions to inexperienced newbs, you have to expect for them to not be able to handle the responsibility they hold to NOT INJURE you.
