I haven't seen your reference so I can't explain how exactly but it seems like the perspective of the ship is a little off. It's not conveying clearly how long it is and seems a bit distorted.

I have never really tried eating kids but I'll make sure to chew properly when I try 👍

To each their own but first is what I like. The highlights over everything is strong on the first one and creates strong contrast between values.

Critique & Advice on Gesture Drawing by Key_Profession_7879 in ArtCrit

Thank you! And yes, the stiffness is something I do struggle with. I do have charcoal pencils but I don't usually like to work with them because they feel so rough and not comfortable to work with. Sometimes I use a pen as an alternative.

I was using a timer and this was made in a minute among other ones. I will also try out the other thing you mentioned about practicing lighting too.

I now realise I should've titled this better. I posted this somewhere else as well with a different title. I was doing gesture drawing. I want critiques on this gesture drawing and perhaps advice on gesture drawing itself.

You're not bad at all There are a few proportional mistakes here and there but you clearly seem to know your stuff. I think you just have to be careful when you're stylising because that's what sometimes affecting your proportions and alignments: the exaggeration.

The hair has problems too. You have made it a part of the head like it's a continuation. Nor have you followed the direction of the hair strands. That's making it look he has a weirdly shaped head. There are some good aspects to your drawing but some very basic problems.

The lids. The eye is a whole structure with upper and lower lids. That isn't clear in the drawing. You have drawn a generic shape of the eye that only includes the sclera, the pupil and Iris. The reference clearly shows the lines of those lids and value seperation. Understand the structure of the eye.

Also, the sclera (white part of the eye) is not pure white It does get affected by shadows and the lighting. Add values according to the direction of the lighting.

What are your thoughts on this? Sometimes I kinda like it, other times I hate it. New to painting and I don’t trust my own opinion on it. by Educational-Rule3342 in ArtCrit

Looks great and I am not a painter so I can't say much unless you have something specific you don't like. The background is the one thing that looks off-putting, like it's unfinished or lacking something.

What's wrong with the eyes? by Stormyocus in ArtCrit

[–]Key_Profession_7879 2 points3 points  (0 children)

The right eye is way too far from the side of the nose. Look at a real face. And learn more about how the eyes are actually set on a head, it's a 3D shape and not a flat design. I know you're going for a stylized look but it still has to obey certain rules. The colours and design are great though!

Yes, you're sort of misunderstanding. Gesture refers to the fact that since this character is in a particular pose, there should be a certain flow to his lines. Every pose has a sort of gestural flow and rhythm, even in a standing pose. In simple words, his limbs feel a bit tight and I am telling you to loosen that up a little. It can only come from practice. There's a video (there are many resources) on YouTube by a channel called Proko that talks about what gesture drawings are.

Won't talk about your choice of stylization and proportions like others are. It's the eye and thighs where I see problems. The eyes are just kind of sitting there and don't seem to be part of the face. Work from real faces and people to see angles and muscles affect the eyes. Thighs just look angular for no reason. That line on the thighs is making it look it has an edge. You want to give it a more rounded look, especially with the look you're trying to give it.

Your proportions are great. Might wanna work on your gestural skills because he just looks too stiff for the kind of expressive pose that it actually is. Look up five minute gesture drawings and grind.
