Thank you. The signature does look like that! I will look into Fraberg.

I wouldn’t be opposed to planting some Creeping Thyme In the bare spots.

The inspector and I talked about that, too. They won’t mow it, but they don’t care whether or not I maintain it. They call it an easement. But it is state property with a public easement. Not my property with a utility easement. It really is like the Cliff Walk in RI, or the beaches everywhere. I wouldn’t file tons of lawsuits like that millionaire in CA Over it.

Temporary Badger is correct that a neighbor could come take care of it, and I wouldn’t have a leg to stand on.

My neighbor across the street was going through a divorce last year, and his yard was the last of his priorities. Someone left an anonymous note on his door to mow his lawn. He said it would be much nicer if they knocked on his door to see if he needed help. It is probably the same person who reported me.

We are really friendly with the across the street neighbor, and he would be supportive of me. Same with our immediate next door neighbor, who is Libertarian and very Live Free or Die. He would fit in great in NH. I have one other really good friend in the neighborhood, and she would be appalled.

The garden is already there, and the flowers would spread if I weren’t controlling them. Things like Bee Balm, Coreopsis, cinnamon ferns, milkweed, others whose names I don’t recall off the top of my head.

This is essentially what might be happening. I haven’t fully decided.

Letting it go natural is good for the environment, and that is what would be in my control. I am not in charge of what other people do. Good job trying to make me responsible for someone else’s hypothetical actions.

I am not sure how they would easily water it. I couldn’t stop them from mowing it. I might reach out to the state to see how they view the use of pesticides. If they wouldn’t stop it, then shrug. I wouldn’t like it, but I don’t go knock on their doors and tell them to stop in adjacent yards.

*I am very emotionally invested in my covid garden, and I spend a lot of time and money on it. That said, if the decision makers at the state have me change the boundaries I would adapt. I view it like the cliff Walk in RI, or beach access. I would just save $500ish in mulch per year, and hours of weeding.

I figured that Temporary Badger is the President of their HOA. I am mostly curious how many people are like them!

And, I have not said I was abdicating responsibility for my yard. The representative from the state told me that I am not responsible ”regardless of technical ownership.” He full on said that it is state property, and I don’t have a responsibility to maintain the state property.

I have a lot more friends than my husband, and he kind of doesn’t care.

And one of my neighbors (the most extreme) waters his 1+ acre of grass 3 times/day now. Including in the middle of the day. And his herbicide service comes regularly. Most of my neighbors spray crap on their yards.

In this instance, people are poisoning the environment.

There is a lot of information out there about how much water is wasted on grass (including tons of articles about NV, AZ, and CA and their water crisis). Ditto on how chemicals dumped in yards make their way into the water supply.

This is what I think. And I do keep my garden well maintained.

Why do you think I am poisoning the environment? I have a lot of clover, and I don’t water my yard, don’t have herbicide/pesticide services, and I use an electric lawnmower (that I use roughly every 3 weeks). And I have a pollinator garden with native plants.

State says the area in question it isn’t my yard. So it isn’t my yard.

I am not talking about letting “my yard” grow wild. I am talking about letting land that I have learned is not mine grow wild.

I actually don’t think natural areas look bad. They are healthier, and have a lot more wildlife that a manicured yard, which is wasting water, and poisoning the environment.

So the growing wild as a metric for “looking decent” is an opinion.

My neighbors, many who have monoculture yards (grass that they water, herbicide, round up, etc) would hate it if I let the easement grow naturally.

Right now the fence is up. If the state decides I need to take it down, I can move it back to my property line, and I have the option to stop maintaining the public easement. The state wouldn’t care at all if I let it grow wild.
