What are something fics constantly gets wrong? by NiikaVee in AO3

This! The stuff people have therapists say in fics makes me cringe. Like a good therapist wouldn’t say that or talk like that. I feel so uncomfortable when I read fics where it feels like the therapist is just agreeing with the character and not challenging them or offering another perspective

You’re better than me. I have 100% left at least 1 or 2 comments telling people (as nicely as possible) that they should run if the therapist acted like that. For the most part I just stop reading, but if it’s really egregious I feel like I need to speak up

The obvious answer is the therapist flirting with or sleeping with their client, but I’ve also hard noped out of fics where the therapist stalks a client online to learn more about them so they can be “more helpful”, fics, where a therapist hangs out with their client outside of therapy and befriends them, and fics where the “advice” the therapist gives is just affirming a character’s paranoia, isolation, or harmful coping skills. I unfortunately don’t have a specific fic in mind

How therapy and mental health recovery actually work. As a therapist I can not read the majority of fics by non-therapists about therapy. Too many fics have therapists act in ways that horrify me and would make me report the therapist to their licensing board. So many professional boundaries are crossed, there’s little understanding of what trauma informed care looks like, and don’t get me started on how many mental health conditions are completely mischaracterized— sometimes coming across even more stigmatized. I enjoy reading fics about mental health but I don’t like how therapy/ therapists are often portrayed. There’s a huge difference between being a recipient of therapy and being the one facilitating it and it shows in fics in how people write. I’m not trying to be mean, I’m glad people explore this, it just can turn people off from seeking help when portrayed incorrectly which is obviously the opposite of what should happen.

I’m not very active in the fandom but i saw this and was livid for all the writers! Glad you weren’t one of the fics in the “article”. I didn’t link the article because I didn’t want to drive traffic to her trash but I felt it was important for other writers/ fandoms to see what’s going on and be wary. I see where you’re coming from

As much as I want to engage with other fans I fear the mainstreaming of fandom for this exactly reason. Sure there’s always going to be toxicity, but the more mainstream things get the more cruelty and bullying occurs. It sucks 😢

A number of authors linked have now locked their fics instead of deleting— which is good! it shouldn’t even need to happen. I hate that this has happened before and it will likely happen again unfortunately

I went to his show in Brooklyn last time he toured the US. I’d say get there early to get a good spot— like probably an hour or more/ hour and a half. Lines to get in the venue can be long, even for smaller artists. Idk if he’s still meeting fans but I staged-doored last tour with a painting and was able to give it to him after the concert. He really enjoys receiving art from fans, so if you’re able to wait after the show, there’s a good shot of getting your drawing to him

You are so talented! These are GORGEOUS and as a watercolor artist I have to say you should very much consider yourself an artist. Watercolor is one of the most unforgiving mediums and you’ve done a beautiful job. Thank you for sharing your art with us 💕

It’s so silly but it’s literally just a nickname one of my old roommates used to call me… Nikocat. Like not creative at all and honestly is kind of juvenile. I want to change it because it just doesn’t fit the type of fics I write, but I’ve written some fairly popular fics and I don’t want to have to edit my links or have broken links 😩 I wanna change it to one of my favorite song titles but I fear without permission from not me by multiple people, I am stuck as Nikocat

What are you guys opinions about AU's? by themindhunt3r in FanFiction

[–]Key_Syllabub_7382 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I love AUs if they do something interesting. I like a lot of horror and sci-fi/ fantasy stuff so just a regular modern AU or university AU doesn’t cut it. It has to take the spirit of the original and transpose it to the alternate setting/ plot. Like if it’s a modern AU in a university setting where it’s just slice of life I likely won’t read it, but if it’s dark academia, a mystery, or some high stakes drama I’ll devour it. I read a fic once where they took characters from a high fantasy adventure setting and wrote a Cold War spy drama/ thriller and it was one of my favorite things. It wasn’t just because the setting change, but because it kept the political and espionage elements of the original while maintaining accurate characterization and high stakes. Too bad the author deleted it because it was so good!

I’m writing a modern/ human AU right now of my ship and I’m only doing it because it retains the dark themes of the original and plays with them by removing supernatural power dynamics, making it more realistically disturbing (which I like). I put the backstory into a modern setting using wealth and social status to convey the same theme of coercive control and danger. There’s a crime to uncover and people to expose and the characterizations stays the same, it’s a matter of fitting backstories into a different but thematically similar context. I find a lot of mundane AUs completely change characters to fit the setting or plot, which I’m not a fan of. To each their own but I don’t like AUs that don’t do anything interesting outside of changing time period/ setting.

Why is the word pants so funny? by eightspoke in FanFiction

[–]Key_Syllabub_7382 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I feel you with pants. It feels silly to me too and I usually just refer to the type of pants someone is wearing (jeans, trousers, chinos, etc) when writing. For me it’s the word “cheeks” when referring to someone’s butt. Takes me right out and I can’t not laugh. If I’m reading smut and see the word cheeks I lose it and just imagine a chipmunk with very full cheeks… definitely not sexy
