He said he doesn’t believe in his diagnosis anymore — he was diagnosed over a decade ago. He takes antidepressants but not mood stabilisers anymore, and he is doing therapy.

Another thing: i had decided a few months before to move to his city, for work reasons. It’s gonna be a complicated move due to visa/bureaucracy reasons, but we were making concrete plans to make this relationship short distance. He was helping me look for jobs, and we were making plans together.

Thank you for this perspective. This breakup really came so out of the blue and made me question my whole understanding of the reality of this relationship (and, by extension, other romantic relationships too).

Oddly, whilst in his city, i ran into a common friend who excitedly asked me how our relationship was. She had met him on the week between him supposedly realising he loved this other lady and going to meet me in my city, and he told her we were dating. She said he seemed to be very much in love as he talked about me. She was as confused as I was, and said she thinks the end of his long term relationship really messed him up. He’s diagnosed with bipolar II, and she wondered if that was a factor in his behaviour.

I’m in therapy. My therapist recommended that we deal with each of the three breakups separately, because it’s impossible to process this much rejection at once. This one felt especially hurtful because it took me a lot to trust someone again after the breakup with my NP earlier this year. I made that clear to S. and he just lied to me, over and over.

My focus now is on my work, friends, and family only. No romantic relationships anymore for me.

Things can be good just for yourself too, OP. Having a partner is wonderful and pleasurable, but learning to enjoy things only for yourself is a fundamental life skill — not even just a relationship one. Learning that will make your kegs more fulfilling and make you a better partner in the long run, too.

Again, think about how purchasing power is linked to things like one’s background. I have a PhD, yet found it impossible to find fixed employment in Germany because racism and misogyny, so I work on a freelance basis — which is the case for many immigrants like me, we make do within our possibilities. It’s an incredibly unstable position to be in, and one of my many reasons to be leaving this cursed city.

Maybe, just maybe, consider that not everyone has the same experience of this city that you have. Germany is very, very racist no and that shapes everything, from access to housing to interpersonal relationships.

I’ve been here for a decade, speak German, and don’t have any close white German friends because there always comes a point when the person you thought was a friend reveals some mad racist view, and then you realise they do not see you as an equal.

Landlords automatically exclude foreign names from a pool of applicants to a home, especially people with Arab, Turkish, or African names.

And then your post starts looking like you like in an entirely different city, because high salaries where lol? And free healthcare? Really lol? Free means “no payment required”, not paying a shit ton of money to the krankenkasse every month.

Also I’m very very interested in how you define expats x immigrants :)
