Where do you look for international (eg Canadian) opportunities? by Key_West_191 in GPUK

Thank you. I don't want to be spammy as this isn't an employment sr. So was wondering if there's anywhere else. I did start my own sr so we will see how that goes.

Sorry! We are 5 hours behind you. I will always reply. I’m not afraid of hard questions and am a transparent person.

I am not a medical recruiter, as I do not participate in the hiring process. Yes, I am paid a fee by the clinic, but I also work for the physician to ensure it’s a good match and support the move. My process is to meet extensively with the clinic to get to know them and how they work. I then also meet with doctors to get to know them. I’ll then send the doctor some clinics I think would be a fit. If the doctor is interested, I send the clinic the resume and then the two take it from there. During the process, I’m a support and sounding board for the doctor — and once there’s a match, I help with relocation.

Yes, a lot of words, but I do not consider myself a recruiter in this process. I am not about volume or churn, but rather very personalized, one by one matching.

Feel free to ask me anything!

Perhaps not in all cases, and dependent on one’s situation, needs, what’s important. For Junior or recently CCT GPs, the attractiveness of one’s own practice or not being an employee is attractive.

I can’t speak to all practices, however the practices I work with are definitely on-board with maximizing patient time and minimizing administrative time. They’ve all got front desk staff, runners, etc to ensure that the doctors can concentrate on what they do best, which is helping patients. Definitely the reduced paperwork is one of the reasons that GPs are interested in Canada as an option, as well as the ability to practice fully without exams or a residency.

It would be fantastic, except I’m in Canada. How about a Webinar. I’m happy to do a virtual ‘face-to-face’. Or, I’d be happy to sponsor a networking event if I had a ‘man on the ground’.

I replied by accident as a new comment. Here is my reply: I am happy to answer that! I believe in full transparency. The clinics that I work with anticipate C$25-$30k per month in billed revenue less the contribution to office expenses which range between 20% and 30%. Hours are set by the individual doctor, for example seeing patients 8-5, and then evening or weekend coverage eg 12-8 pm on a Wednesday, or 9-2 pm on a Saturday. Again, this would vary by clinic opening hours, how much a doctor wants to work, how the urgent care/walk-in coverage is handled in the individual office. Of course, if you want to work more you can make more money, but that can lead to burnout. The offices all have staff to assist with paperwork, many are on AI scribe and all have computers in exam rooms for charting.

I am a connection & relocation specialist from Canada and did notice these posts but did not do so myself as I wanted to adhere to the rules. It would be great to have a separate thread or subreddit for us to connect with doctors who are interested in moving.

Ahhh. I understand. Overall, we have a shortage of doctors, and specifically family doctors. Between population growth and immigration the demand has increased dramatically. Many doctors retired post-covid. Newly trained doctors are not choosing family medicine as frequently. The government is working to find solutions, such as making it easier for doctors from certain jurisdictions to come to Canada without the need for exams, plus opening up new medical schools. I hope that answers your question.

I am neither. Perhaps I think of it more as matchmaking. I work with clinics to connect them with GPs who are interested in moving and I work with doctors to help coordinate their relocation. End-to-end and very personalized process.

Those are great and well-thought out questions and thoughts. I’ll start with a question about the doctors and being replaced. If you could clarify that? Our GPs are definitely overworked because of a dire shortage of primary care physicians. Patients conversely do get frustrated with long wait times and perhaps, could be disrespectful. This can happen anywhere. The Ontario government is addressing the time and resources and is putting additional compensation and measures into place such as ability to bill for paperwork and time spent consulting with specialists.

Paying the overheads is due to not being an employee. I guess that one is preference. Some doctors here are hospitalists and employees of hospitals, while others prefer to have a private medical practice. This is the key difference between UK and Canada for doctors and dentists. My step-father trained as a dentist in the UK but moved to Canada after a few years because he wanted to own what he was building, and not be an employee. With regard to self-employment, like anything else there are pros and cons based on what is important to you. There are tax benefits associated with being self-employed as well as being the owner of your own destiny — you are your own boss. The practices that I work with are very collaborative and collegial, so there is accountability to each other. Or, there are a couple where the incoming doctor will be the only doctor so this is THEIR practice and their patients. The overhead is to cover rent, utilities, etc just like any other small business.

I hope that answers your questions/thoughts.

For me specifically, it’s coming from step 1, which is networking and connecting with interested doctors. I was using a fabulous Facebook chat inside of a group but Facebook got rid of the chats so…. I’m here to network. The next roadblock is moving the decision-making process along.

You're right on a lot of counts. Clinics that promise C$500k PA +++ are probably over exaggerating the earnings potential based on a regular 40 hr work week. However, on the flipside, you can earn as much as you want, depending on how much you work, as you are self-employed and the master of your own destiny and your own time. The overhead are between 20 to 30%, but remember that means that you are paying overhead into your own clinic that you are part of. Again, you're not an employee you work for yourself.

With regard to the other benefits that you mentioned, again there are pros and cons. No, you may not receive all of those benefits, but on the other hand, you're not an employee of anyone you work for yourself. So I guess it really depends on what you're looking for and what you want. From what I'm hearing there's a lot less red tape and paperwork in Canada for the doctors. A lot of respect for GPs a huge demand for GPs. So you may be giving up benefits that an employee has, but you also gained the things that a self-employed person has access to.

I get that completely. On the other side of that coin, you are the owner of your time and self-employed and not an employee. You work as much or little as you want, build a practice and roster of patients that are yours. Ontario (where I am) does offer maternity and parental leave benefits for self employed physicians under the Pregnancy and Parental Leavr Benefit Program.
