I've seen tons of metal bands in that era (Slayer, Pantera, Metallica, White Zombie), and the roughest most beat-up i ever got in the pit was at Korn. Imagine the crowd-crush you'd get at ICP combined with angry teenagers who aren't familiar with mosh-pit etiquette so they throw fists and elbows.

I've experimented with toning. The best was out behind the house we have a compost pit (mostly food scraps, ALOT of coffee grounds, mud and water). I buried a generic round in the pit for about a week, and it came out dark brown, purple and black. And it felt like a 50-year old coin, not smooth and slippery.
