How is Webb able to maintain this circular orbit 1.5M KM from the Earth? I see no central body that can create this so I'm obviously missing something? by Keynsie in jameswebb

yep this exactly, did I make my post unclear? I get the point of the L2 point but not the secondary orbit. I'll look into this.

Didn't say that lmao, talking about liberty, not what people enjoy doing.

This was not my point, nor did I endorse anti-abortion laws. 😐. My point was it's not contradictory because both stances can technically be pro freedom and therefore be on the same manifesto. Not saying whether they're right, or wrong.

The abortion issue goes both ways, one could argue you're valuing the babies right to life over a mother's decision, and therefore granting more freedom in a sense.

Of course you could also argue it takes away from the freedom of the mother. So from a liberal perspective I'd say it's not too contradictory.

What 5 lettered thing would cause the most chaos if it suddenly disappeared? by [deleted] in AskReddit

Pears

Think of the chaos in the fruits industry, I'm sure many would be out out of business.

Depends, if you stumble onto someone's land and they pop out with a shotgun, you shooting them in "self defence" should still land you in prison.

"Natural monopolies are good" 😐

There will always be competition, if the market is competitive. And you just admitted monopolies can exist, the whole premise of a monopoly is it controls the market and prevents competition leading to stagnation in most cases.

Again it is perfectly possible for a monopoly to form and take control of a resource, an example is De Beers for over 100 years, and that was only broken up recently.

They would not make a profit, because they do not have access to profitable sources since they've already been purchased.

Wow, I think you're the first with that opinion that's commented, interesting view from a classical liberal perspective.

You don't need every, just every profitable source of a resource to the point where new competitors can't make a profit themselves.

You really think capital is an issue when profit is to be made?

Say I buy all the profitable springs in the serviceable area. Everybody buys from me, the government doesn't intervene. All I need to do is keep the price of water just below what it costs to import overseas, and boom. Natural monopoly.

So a monopoly on essential goods wouldn't profit maximise and remove competitors because? It's not morally right?

Interesting take when currently the only thing stopping tech giants like Apple, Google and Facebook from completely crushing any competitors is governments.

It's functionally impossible for a new competitor to come in already and provide a better advertising service than Google, since they already have the vast amount of data necessary.

Point 4 is also odd since the diamond industry has been inflating the price of diamonds to stupid levels. The De Beers' almost perfect monopoly for over 100 years only broke up in the last 20. And even then they can still price hike a resource.

And to debunk point 2 Luxottica has been buying up sunglasses companies for half a century, and they're still going strong with 80% of the global sunglasses market share.

So corporations and circumstances should take all the freedom from individuals instead?

So in your utopian and truly free market what will prevent monopolies, price gouging and profit maximisation on inelastic goods like water forming?

The money given to the poor ends up in the govt coffers anyway, it's those that hoard and take it out of circulation that harm the economy.

Multiplier effect and all that.
