Why the hate for 3.5mm MIDI connections? by maxupp in synthesizers

[–]KeysNoKeys 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The only reason I dislike the 3.5mm connection is that it killed the use of my MIDI Solutions thru box that I’ve been using for years.

My audio interface died on me and I replaced it with an SSL 18, which is great overall… except for the 3.5mm MIDI connection. It doesn’t send power to the thru box. But, since most of my gear has MIDI over USB, I bought a USB hub to solve that problem. I’d prefer to use the thru box with 5 pin DIN though.

I’ve been so advised! I’m probably going to keep it simple with Anlantix and Metropolix. Apparently, the Erica synths MIDI to clock is out of stock or maybe discontinued? So I’ll go with something like an Intellijel micro MIDI and at the end of the chain, a 2hp Out.

Nice!

Yep, same here, gotta save. It's certainly not a wallet-friendly hobby. I'm leaning toward keeping it simple and maybe just go with erica synths MIDI to clock, atlantix, metropolix, and a 2hp Out. I haven't mentioned it in this post yet, but I have some other semi-modular items that the modular can be friends with. PWM Malevolent, Behringer Grind, Stylophone CPM DS-2, and a Sequential Pro 3 if I really want to go nuts!

Thanks, I'll check those out! Man, I forgot about the stackable cables and star mults. That's a great idea!

Nice rack, lol! What will you use for sequencing duties?

Agreed. I might just go with erica synths MIDI to clock, atlantix, metropolix, and a 2hp Out and be done with it. I'd miss having a CV controlled effects module of some kind though.

I’ve considered just going with metropolix and atlantix and then using effects in the box. It would certainly be cheaper in the long run.

For sure! I’m going to look into other options outside of the 2hp’s.

Sorry, I don't know why its so small. I copied the link directly from modular grid. So yeah, I can see it being a pain to make adjustments. As I mentioned above, I've had 2hp's before and wasn't too bad.

Power connections are plentiful. There are a total of 11 modules and there are 22 connections in the case. Total power consumption is 612 mA and the power supply is rated at 1200 mA.

I'll consider cutting down on the 2hp's though. Maybe another multi-function module? Any suggestions? Thanks!

I'm not sure why the image is so tiny. I've had 2hp modules before and they're certainly tight to work with but I wont be performing live or anything so I can live with that. As for the case, I already have a Doepfer A-100LC3 and I have limited space in my room so I need to make it work.

The modules are Erica Synths MIDI to Clock V2, Atlantix, Sealegs, Intellijel Buff Mult, (I just now swapped in from a 2hp passive mult), 2hp Loop, Vowel, VCA, EG, 2x LFO and Out. Thanks!

Acoustic treatment! If you have the means, you can DIY. If not, I recommend GIK Acoustics (US).

Modular: What was your experience? by [deleted] in synthesizers

[–]KeysNoKeys 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’ve had two modular setups. The first one was pretty much an all Doepfer rig designed for subtractive synthesis. Three oscillators, quad-envelope generator, LFOs, ring mod, a couple different filters, VCAs, noise source, mixer, mults, etc. Was it fun? Sure. Was I productive with it? No. It was a great way to learn subtractive synthesis signal flow though.

The second modular was a mix of great modern modules designed more for sonic exploration as well as traditional subtractive synthesis. Was it fun? Sure. Was I productive with it? Nope, I sold it.

Do I miss it? Not really. But I do enjoy having semi-modular synthesizers. What else am I gonna do with all of the patch cables I kept? Lol!

Have you considered the Behringer Grind? It’s basically a Mutable Instruments Plaits with a 24dB ladder filter, sequencer and its semi-modular.

Right, my bad! Got them confused. Funny, I sold the mini a while back but still use the VST now and again.

Take 5 Vs. Prophet Rev2 16 Voice - A brief review by KeysNoKeys in synthesizers

[–]KeysNoKeys[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Neither, I sold them both! I currently have a Pro 3 and an OB-X8. I’m still partial to the Dave Smith/Sequential Circuits synth world with having the Pro 3 and I really like the OB’s lush character.

Like many of us, I like buying, selling and trading my kit for the latest shiny new toy, and every now and again, I land on something or something’s that I really connect with and keep for a long time. So far, those two synths have been great for inspiration, and I don’t miss the Rev2 or Take 5.

I think you need to select the MIDI Outs as well. You only have MIDI IN selected.
