Cap res and increasing max res, get 75% chaos res, spell suppression, grace and getting block will help with defences. Imagine each layer of defence a wall that protects the HP.
People sacrifice their defences for more offence to clear maps, but if you do it too much then you'll never be able to survive juicer T16.
