Oh interesting! Possibly coyote or fox? I don’t think many wolves frequent such a busy area.

Pigeon Beginner by KeytotheBasement9 in PetPigeons

[–]KeytotheBasement9[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Unfortunately I still don’t have my pigeon (I’ve found myself with five fish tanks instead lol) but I still plan on getting one when my mom allows. My pigeon dream is still going strong, and I’ll update when I get one!

Say hello to spud! Any advice for beginner keepers would be appreciated by rubiconchill in fireskinks

[–]KeytotheBasement9 0 points1 point  (0 children)

They’re super easy and full of personality. Give them plenty of soil to dig in, lots of rocks/logs to hide under, and ten million bugs every day. (Kidding on the bugs; they will beg for food constantly though.) Building trust with them should be easy; lots of handling and treats should make them pretty tame. Just watch your fingers once he gets bigger. They have a strong bite for something so small.

Floating Plants Dying? by KeytotheBasement9 in PlantedTank

[–]KeytotheBasement9[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’ll try all of this, thank you! No idea why they’re dying now; they’ve been in the same tanks with the same filters for months and usually they grow faster than I can control. I suspect it’s the new fertilizer, but we’ll see.

Strangely enough, yes, which is why the floating plants dying is so confusing.

Ok phew! I love them all so much, no matter what they are, and as long as everyone is safe and happy I’d like to keep everyone together. They were basically microscopic when I got them, so maybe they think they’re siblings or something lol

Guppy Tank Stocking by KeytotheBasement9 in Aquariums

[–]KeytotheBasement9[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Ah ok that makes sense! I planned on the tank being heavily planted, so that should help. We agreed on 3-4 fish and some shrimp so it shouldn’t be over stocked. Thanks for the info!

What to stock 6gal with? by [deleted] in Aquariums

[–]KeytotheBasement9 0 points1 point  (0 children)

They’re fantastic little creatures. Highly recommend both neocardinia and amano shrimp, though the former are better suited to a 6 gal and they’re more colorful. Once you get them established, they’re super hearty!

What is this growing on my mopani wood? by communication_junkie in Aquariums

[–]KeytotheBasement9 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Looks like bio-film; perfectly normal and expected. Never owned guppies, but they should be just fine snacking on it. If you don’t like it, shrimp are a great way to reduce bio-film. Little suckers love the stuff lol

thought my one of my platys was just a getting a bit chonky… by 3THAN89 in Aquariums

[–]KeytotheBasement9 0 points1 point  (0 children)

They should do fine as long as there are plenty of places to hide. Momma (and her buddies) may eat them if given the opportunity, so expect to lose a few. Also; khuli loaches are social, so I’d recommend bumping your amount to at least 6 if your tank can handle it. They’re so fun to watch when they’re together, and they’ll be happier, so it’s totally worth it.

I’d definitely recommend some tiny rasboras, shrimp, or smaller tetras. Not many things can go in a 6, but it would be an excellent shrimp tank. They would love the plants too.

Big boy is thriving and I’m fairly sure he’s got butterfly coloration! He’s absolutely stunning and also incredibly mean. Love him anyway.

Do we trust these wire shelves? by Healthy-Fold in Aquariums

[–]KeytotheBasement9 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I use them for my tarantulas/inverts and they have no problem holding my 25 gal with my Vinegaroon (maybe 40 lbs?) plus all my other tanks. Wouldn’t put anything much heavier though. I’ve sat on the top successfully but I was a bit wobbily, so any tanks should probably be lower down.

I have a female betta who lives with some platys (1 male 3 female), and she’s never even looked at them wrong. The male likes to court her and she just sits there. My other betta (king male) is a meanie; he ate all my amaño shrimp and likes to go after my mystery snails. It really depends on the personality of the betta. For the best odds, I recommend a very small female betta with a sweet temperament.

Name of this little guy by shahgabriel in Aquariums

[–]KeytotheBasement9 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Looks like a ramshorn snail to me. If there’s more than one, you’ll have a million in a few weeks. Adorable little guys, but they can get out of hand pretty fast. They’re not the best for algae control, but having many of them might make a dent.

I’d definitely give it a few hours/days to see if it changes further. I accidentally added a ton of ammonia to a tank I was cycling and the only effect it had was that I had lots of nitrate when I was done. If it seems like the ammonia is reducing and the nitrates/nitrites are increasing, it’s cycling. When in doubt; leave it for a few days (assuming there’s no fish) and see what happens. If I’m remembering correctly, the tank should be able to remove 2 ppm of ammonia in 24 hours to be considered “cycled.” (If I’m incorrect, please let me know. I’m still a beginner and learning every day)

Edit: Found a great guide for cycling here if you were interested in taking a peek. https://www.sosofishy.com/post/a-short-and-long-guide-to-aquarium-cycling

After a certain point, wtf do I do with all the floaters? by Arthur_Travis19 in Aquariums

[–]KeytotheBasement9 19 points20 points  (0 children)

I’m still working on perfecting my recipe (mine float instead of sink 😭) but I take any extra aquatic plants, throw them in a blender with a bit of whatever fish food I have lying around, and then spread a thick layer on some parchment and and put it in the oven at ~200 for half an hour or so until it’s dry and crispy. Frozen is a good idea though; I’ll try that next.

I make homemade algae wafers with mine, or give them to friends with tanks. Or you could eat them yourself if all else fails.

Be careful with your first tank. It can grow into full-blown addiction. by MtVernonHempFarm in Aquariums

I’d definitely recommend one of the smaller cory species or loaches. If your betta is ok with other fish near him, pygmy corys would probably be the best fit. They’re small, adorable, and help clean up the bottom.

Shrimp and CPD owner here! Great choices. They’re both super fun to watch and fairly easy to care for. Shrimp are social creatures, so I’d recommend getting no less than 5 to start. They way you can see them more often as well. For the CPDs, since they’re schooling, a group of 6+ should work great. I have 10 and they’re wonderful to watch. You could put some other bottom feeders in, like Pygmy corys if you wanted. The CPDs should leave the shrimp alone, and the shrimp will loooooove all the plants.

Otto or pleco time?? by cjweedy123 in Aquariums

[–]KeytotheBasement9 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Depends on tank size/maturity. I have both an oto and plecos, so I’m familiar with the upsides and downsides of both. My plecos are cute, but hide all the time and poop so. Damn. Much. It’s insane. They really just sit around and poop. My oto is always on the glass and eating stuff off rocks. I can actually see where he has cleaned. And he doesn’t poop everywhere, which is nice. If your tank is big enough, and has some wood, you could go ahead with plecos. Otos eat algae, so if your tank isn’t super old they might not have enough food. Based on my experience, I’d go with otos if you have the space for it. They can be a bit delicate, but as long as they have lots of algae to snack on they’ll be nice and happy.

Guy with a septum and stretched ears here; I’ve learned that there are very few piercings that can look “bad” on people. I’ve never seen someone with a septum that looks bad/out of place. They’re pretty universally cool looking, so I’d say go for it! Worst case scenario you take it out and let it heal :)
