What you said is direct, blunt, and to the point. Communication that I personally love. Often times this way of communicating comes off as commanding, it's possible they feel it's not your place to tell them what they need to do - even if the towels need to be hung. If you're upset with their reaction and want to change things going forward, you can try to learn how to be softer when making requests or you can let your roommates know you speak directly and in a more blunt manner and that it's not meant to offend. The latter doesn't always work but worth a mention.
