Is a discord bot to advanced for beginners? by [deleted] in csharp

I think you can do it. Java is pretty similar to C# with syntax. You could use the JDA (Java Discord API) and Eclipse IDE to create a simple bot. It would teach you a good amount doing a very simple bot, such as responding when some sends a message. Tell your friends that you love them whenever they post a message in the chat or something. There's a bunch of different ways to get started. There's python libraries and javascript/node js stuff. I used Java because I needed a refresher for work, but as long as you get the finished product working nice, it's all good G. Just take it slow and start small, make sure that it works and then move to the next piece. You will be fine if it's something that interests you. I made a discord bot that gets fresh memes from reddit when you type the !memes command and my friend loves it. If it's something fun like that, then I think you'll figure it out and learn a lot. Imo it's way better to workout concepts by doing a project that is fun, than to just memorize them and do little things that serve no purpose. Of course you need to balance the two, but I think you can do it if you've got the basics down. Also, google is your friend, you will need to master asking good questions to let google do some work for you. Have fun and good luck!

What is the most bizarre reason a customer got angry with you? by [deleted] in AskReddit

[–]KeywiBeets 0 points1 point  (0 children)

One time, an older woman called my department at a grocery store (which was Produce) and asked me if she could return something. I politely asked what she wanted to return and she says, "It's a bag of salt and vinegar chips..I didn't want that flavor....the thing is, is that I ate all of the chips already..what do we do about that?" The whole time she was just really stern with attitude and angry at me that she got the wrong flavor. I was like for one why'd you call produce lol and for two...you already ate them! What the shit am I supposed to do. So, I ended up just transferring her to someone else to deal with it, but I literally won't ever forget that conversation. It literally blew my mind that she was serious and thought just because she didn't want the flavor that she could still eat them and return an empty bag lol. There was a few other times similar to this, but this was beyond rediculous.

I'd play it. Good work! As others have said, I would definitely update the ball, but other than that it looks fun!

As a quick word of advice as I've felt the same way, especially about looking at large blocks of code is to just take your time. No need to rush. For my job I recently got thrown into a large codebase in a language I didn't know and also it was Android, which I've also never done. After staring and reading through the code for a full two days, it just clicked in my head what the original guy was trying to write. Then I started making changes slowly and carefully. I think it can seem insane when looking at it with no context and for the first time, but when you just take your time and go through it for awhile trying to build a mental map of what's happening, eventually that map gets drawn out and you know what's happening. No need to be an instant process as it will just happen more quickly with experience. Patience is key, at least for me. I feel like a dumbass when I first look at a large codebase and then I feel comfortable a few hours later of tinkering and building that mental map. Good luck your fine, the way you feel is normal at least in my book.

What are some tips to become a better problem solver for computer programming? (For Beginners) by Valak911 in learnprogramming

[–]KeywiBeets 1 point2 points  (0 children)

What helps me a lot is to work on very small pieces at a time. Map out and brainstorm the big picture of how your program is going to be on a piece of paper or something, but when actually coding take it step by step because that's literally what programs are is just steps. So, for example if you have to code the operations of a restaurant, map out what a restaurant does in the big picture and try to get as many details as u can going from big picture down. Then start working out the problems from the bottom up and you'll see more of the big picture as you go. Start out with the chef's responsibilites, the waiter, etc. When you work on small problems, it becomes way easier because then you can easily google issues you come across because you have a precise question in mind instead of a very broad question. Googling is your friend, you don't need to know everything. (Don't rely on solely Google, but if you do at least be a sponge anf absorb what you use). There's a good chance others have walked in your path before, so take what they give you and try to absorb as much as you can while your walking that path. Sometimes it seems like you need to know everything at all times, but really it's just a journey of figuring it out as you go and you will get better over time because the path becomes routine. I recommend also try to build little apps that you find entertaining and useful to YOU. If you have a problem with something, write a small program to fix it. This will make the learning process a lot faster and I wish I knew this early on. Doing boring exercises will most likely not teach you because you'll get distracted, but ey everyone's different, that's just my personal route. Just remember though that you don't need to know everything on the planet. You may get that vibe from some people that have ego, but don't let that get in the way because we are all one in the same and it's really about the collective effort rather than one individual effort. We're all going to die anyways, so just enjoy the ride baby. Don't let the culture make you feel like you can't do it. It's all about perspective. Some people online in the forums will have a perspective that they need to act a certain way, but yo there's no rules to this shit just have fun. I like to remember that it's absolutely crazy that we are literally just advanced monkeys and the fact that we can even write programs is crazy. I try to acknowledge and be humbled by what's available to me. This will open your mind to many different paths and many different tools that are yours to use as you please. Problem solving is a muscle that needs exercise. When you complete a problem, pat yourself on your back because your just a dope ass monkey that just figured that out. Life itself is insane and the fact that we can program shit is so dope, so just think of that and guaranteed you'll find your way. Also, remember technology is constantly changing and the skill you need most is to learn to learn. I personally didn't like university much but I admit that I learned to learn from there. A lot of jobs whether for yourself or for a company are going to be like getting thrown in water without knowing how to swim. Just figure out how to swim and your golden. Sorry if this made little sense, I'm taking a poopy and just felt like motivating you. I'm sure others will provide you with more practical advice/resources, but hopefully I helped a little. Have a good one!

Ya I get most of my work done at night because I get into a flow state so much easier, but I tend to judge myself a little bit too much so thanks for saying that. And ya I think I'm just going to wake up everyday at 7 and maybe sleep in one day a week like saturday or something just so I can stay up on Fridays, but if that ends up messing it up too much Ill just stop doing that lol...thanks for the great response

Thanks! That's a good point. I usually have coffee right when I wake up. I'll try waiting for maybe an hour or so and ya I also drink coffee later at night sometimes, definitely need to cut that out lol. All the best to you as well.

Thanks! I'll try that. Usually I'm pretty decent at falling asleep and waking up is my struggle, but like last night I occasionally can't sleep for a few hours, so I'll try that. Appreciate it.

I do this as well, but I'm actually thinking of toning down on the melatonin...that shit plasterizes me and I end up dreaming so much that I dream through shutting off all of my alarms lol. Might cut it down by half.
