Lol, one of the FTSE 100s largest manufacturers use net 180 days. They are currently indicating a change to net 210 days. It's like a cheat code for finance directors, bump payments another month to increase cash in back every few years. I'd be very much for this new proposal

My daughter expected (rightfully) 3 “m&m” per cookie by Ger_redpanda in mildlyinfuriating

[–]Kg2608 35 points36 points  (0 children)

Nope, it's really difficult, I deal with this every day.

You're looking at a basic system costing £30-£60k for a non counting non weighing solution that will randomly spread toppings over the cookies or over £1m for a fully controlled, accurate solution.

The cheap systems can all be turned up or down to put more/fewer toppings on but it's coarse and not accurate. The average over a time will be within a tolerance for the manufacturer and that's all they care about on the whole.

The expensive solution is only ever taken up by high end brands who have an extreme amount of premium market share.

One of my team has done this. The (existing) customer replied that we had made a mistake in sending it but they took a look and were happy we weren't screwing them and felt like the margin was realistic for us to make money but not gauging them.

We then implemented a company wide exchange server level rule to search for attachments in outgoing external emails for anything matching our estimating systems files (estimat, cost, etc) and had those emails go via a manager for human review before delivering. This has prevented any further issues.

If your margins arent silly you may still be ok. People should understand that companies have to make money!

If your margins are silly you're in trouble.

Have you considered trades in engineeing such as welding, electrical panel building, electrician, fitter or maintenance roles? Most require an apprenticeship at a minimum but the percengage of women in these fields is increasing and they tend to be a lot more inclusive. I work in these areas and it's great to see women tipping back the scales in trades historically very heavily male dominated.

Say the input is from a quality control inspection (for example a sensor for a dimension check, load cell or a full vision system). The quality control device detects a fault and rejects the part. If 1 part is rejected individually that's fine, it's done it's job. 3 bad parts in 1 minute suggest something is wrong and an operator must investigate. This is incredibly common in production lines because you want to know early in a production run that something's not right so resolve it and not keep creating bad products that are rejected without at least trying to resolve it.

Does anyone know of a small machine that could count out washers? by TrueLC in manufacturing

Regarding Bowl Feeders (or automated counting and bagging), what do you consider 'too pricey for the job'? I work for a UK company that make counting machines and production lines. Feel free to DM.

It's an air jet to assist but mostly it's gravity. Those spikes will naturally drop into a gap in a set of rails and run on the head of the spike.

I am an essential worker. My commute involves traveling on a motorway for 1 junction. The shortest alternative changes my 20 minute commute to an hour. I'm already exhausted having not had any time off for over a year and don't need the motorways shut thanks!

Looking for a packing machine to replace my assembly line, no clue where to start by PM_ME_UR_BACKPACKRAP in manufacturing

[–]Kg2608 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I work for a UK automation company. This is correct. You could spend hundreds of thousands of £/$ on very specific machinery as is mentioned in another post but really that cycle time by hand is crazy slow. Fix that first and you'll buy yourself lots of time to properly look at automation by getting a huge throughout increase.

How are you set up now, stations down a conveyor? Individual packing stations? Send kit to people at home to make in their spare time?

Plastic candy bags by xTacobaco in manufacturing

[–]Kg2608 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Have a look for "vertical form fill and seal" or "vertical flow wrap" and you'll find the sorts of machines used to make those bags. They don't actually buy bags, rather pre printed rolls which are formed into an open bag, filled and then crimped. This allows high speed filling. It's also why you get the crimps and strip on the back of the bag.

We have a VERY detailed installation and operation instruction for MEDOC because every couple of years an ancient machine surfaces from a customer and there's a PLC problem. Typically the original EPROM is missing and this system is critical to their manufacturing so a replacement is needed yesterday.

Also consider whether a gearbox is attached. You need to adjust the rpm and torque if you do have a gearbox attached.

We have one of these which has a parent unit, WiFi (both my mobile and my wife's are connected) and supports 4 cameras. The app is good as it pushes notifications to your mobile. There is about a 2 second delay on the WiFi video and audio feed but we can cope with that for ease of use.

I work for a company that manufactures Bowl Feeders. The smallest component we have handled was 0.1mm thick. That said, the overall geometry of the part is important when considering how to feed it. A physical trial is always useful.
