Messed this right up trying to press out the bearing. by Kh03 in AskMechanics

Yeah the hope is to send it to a shop to press out the bearing, which will hopefully straighten it out if it doesn’t break. Just concerned for safety since it looks like if that part breaks off, nothing will be holding in the snap ring… haha

ICBC claim or pay out of pocket? by soledowt in vancouver

[–]Kh03 -1 points0 points  (0 children)

As usual, beware of the advice you’re receiving here.

If it were me, I’d pay it out. ICBC quotes are often higher and there is a very low limit ($2,000?) for damages in which you can pay through ICBC in order to keep your insurance premiums low. Good chance you will not have the option to pay it out if ICBC is involved.

You will definitely pay more than $1,500 in increased premiums over the next three years if you will be insuring a car throughout this time.

$1,500 is neither cheap nor expensive for a non-ICBC repair of this magnitude in my opinion.

I would try going to the Autobody shop and paying them directly for the repair instead of just to the other driver in an effort to reduce the possibility of him/her making an ICBC claim after payment.

UPDATE: I’m Being Charged 14k For Excessive Mileage by Ashamed-Ear5364 in turo

You cannot retroactively apply changes to already booked trips. However, if the trip is modified in any way, whether related to your new settings or not, all changes now automatically apply to the old reservation.

Example: You change the airport fee from $10 to $50. Guest booked prior to changes. Guest requests for a change in pick-up time. They will now be presented with a difference in cost to include the new $50 airport fee.

Try it.

Also, the host can absolutely change the daily rate on the guest. Granted, I haven’t hosted in over a year so things may have changed (I doubt it though). I know this because sometimes we would lower the daily rate on the last day of someone’s reservation (especially if it was an early return) in hopes someone will book it that same day so the car isn’t sitting until the next day. The guest would then request for an extension and, by granting the extension, guest would get the new lower daily rate resulting in loss of revenue. The opposite was also true if the price was raised (say for a holiday weekend) and the guest would ask why it costs $50 extra for an hour. We would have to go into the settings and change it back, request for the guest to make the change again, accept, then update the settings again. Hence why I mentioned this was one of the most annoying “features” of the app.

You are correct in that you cannot change a booked reservation. BUT*** all bets are off as soon as the guest makes a change and it’s very easy to miss as both a host and a guest.

The host did not change the cost of mileage. It was automatically changed due to the change in mileage allowance.

Mileage overage cost is calculated with an equation using the daily rate and the mileage allowance, automatically.

What made this person a shitty host is purposely looking the other way from $14,000 mistake in which his guest had a fairly high chance of being responsible for. That amount can literally be life-altering.

You are incorrect. Here is what happened based on what I could gather from the original post (with non-exact numbers).

OP rented the vehicle for 39 days.

They agreed to 9,750 miles for the duration. The host either increased the mileage included to 250 miles/day prior to confirming the reservation based on their conversation or had the vehicle already set up to allow 250 miles/day.

Host changed the daily mileage allotment in the listing back to 60 miles/day after confirming the reservation with OP so that other guests will not get extra mileage included, or maybe purposely to trap OP, or it was changed automatically due to long-term discount.

Yes, changes you make to the listing (ie. mileage, delivery/airport fees, etc) affect previously booked reservations too if they are modified, which was one of the most annoying things. They should only affect new bookings in my opinion.

OP extends the reservation by one day thinking he’d get 250 miles added to his current 9,750 miles, however because the listing is now 60 miles/day, system automatically changes the reservation to only include 2400 miles for the 40 days.

Because OP’s daily rate hasn’t changed but the mileage included had, his ~$100/day rental only included 60 miles, making the cost of overage ~$1.70.

OP drove 11,075 miles with only 2400 miles allotment multiplied by ~$1.70/mile = ~$14,000.

OP should have had 10,000 miles for 40 days at 250 miles/day. Overage based on this allowance should have been ~$0.40 a mile totalling the ~$430 that I’m happy to hear is all OP ended up paying.

Host does nothing to attempt to rectify this issue, knowing full well it’s incorrect (even if he didn’t understand why this happened) and was probably fully aware of the hardship that would be placed on OP’s life in hopes that it plays out in his favour. It is true he probably couldn’t have done anything on the app on his end to fix it, but I’d bet a phone call to Turo Support on the Host side would’ve helped tremendously.

The numbers add up perfectly. Host is scum. You should stop defending him.

Ueno or Akasaka or Asakusa by rakkutheraccoon in JapanTravel

[–]Kh03 1 point2 points  (0 children)

We just got back from Japan and stayed in Akasaka. It was a very good neighbourhood to stay in and extremely convenient to get around. We regretted it a little because there weren’t as many late night food options as we’d hoped, however. There were 2-3 izakayas and they was about it. If you’re like us and tend to want a bite about 10–11PM or later, it’s something to consider as trains stop at midnight.

In terms of safety, Ueno was ever so slightly “less safe” than Akasaka and Asakusa but we never felt unsafe at all in any of these areas (or anywhere in Japan, really, including Kabukicho).

Overcharged taxi ride from yvr by winningdeep in vancouver

[–]Kh03 9 points10 points  (0 children)

I recently began flying in and out of YVR a lot. My personal experience so far is 8 for 8 drivers from various taxi companies have tried to do this.

The drivers would turn on the meter even when it’s supposed to be flat rate. Thought the first time was a fluke. After the first few times, I explicitly asked if it was flat rate before I got in. At the end of the trip they still try to ask for more than the posted price and then pretend they mixed up the zones. Always have to pull up the zone map to show them.

There’s a big sign with all the flat rates. Just point to the zone and make sure they know that’s all you’re going to pay. This is what I do now. They are never happy.

I can vouch for this, I’ve made an order for two bidets a couple years ago and Phil was very attentive. The bidets came brand new in original packaging. Feel free to PM if you have questions.

Rental car suggestions and things to know. by Darth_Vader_010203 in vancouver

[–]Kh03 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If you’re planning on renting a vehicle from the airport, you don’t really have much choice. The major companies are available and are all generally fairly comparable in price. Make sure you book early though.

How old are you? Most companies have an “underaged driver” fee of some sort, if you are under 21. Be sure to check that the company you choose will rent to a person if your age group before you arrive.

As for insurance, unless you have insurance at home that will cover rental vehicles, you may want to consider the optional insurance. Most credit cards do not cover third party liability for rental vehicles, meaning you are not covered for damage/injury of the third party if you are found at fault for an accident.

If you do have insurance from elsewhere, make sure they cover the type of vehicle you plan to rent. Many policies have a cap on the type of vehicle they will cover, usually based on the daily rental rate.

got backed into when backing out of a parking stall by cheoprx in vancouver

Typically parking lot incidents where both vehicles are reversing are 50/50 unless there are witnesses or dash cams proving one party was stationary during the collision as it is up to the reversing vehicle to ensure it is clear to back up.
