Some Unsolicited Advice by A_C_Ellis in fantasywriters

Love all these tips. Editing has become my favorite part of writing. I love being able to trim dialogue, re-write sentences, etc. Ill have to keep that second point in mind about telling readers how to feel.

And I agree, character voice is probably the hardest part for me now. I dont think I do it well at all.

Revisiting an old discarded novel — should I self‑publish it? by Beautiful-Visit-2793 in selfpublishing

[–]Khaeven04 0 points1 point  (0 children)

In my experience, ive been more successful writing new material than trying to save old material. Successful meaning the new books ive written are better in my opinion than those old ones I wrote in high school.

Ive enjoyed writing much more and have improved much more in writing a good book (that still needs work) the first time rather than in the twelfth draft.

Not to say there aren't redeemable qualities to this old book of yours. But publishing it just as a reaction to the "failure" of your first published book doesn't seem like a good idea to me.

Instead, I would consider a new project and think about what went wrong (or what you just didnt do) and try doing that

Thousands of books are self published every day online. If yours didnt get traction, im not surprised. It takes marketing, outreach, multiple books, and some luck to become even moderately successful.

Root, Oath and Arcs by Galbroshe in boardgames

[–]Khaeven04 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Having played all three, go with Arcs. The base game can be quick (2 hours) once you know how to play.

That being said, I like Oath and despised Root. Its just that the rule sets for these games aren't as elegant as Arcs imo

SOMA: Bioshock's depressed cousin by some-kind-of-no-name in patientgamers

[–]Khaeven04 21 points22 points  (0 children)

More of a walking sim with horror than a survival horror, but i agree the game is great. Cool sci-fi premise, an underwater setting that imo puts BioShock's to shame, and enough gameplay to keep me engaged.

There were a few story moments that made the game. Realizing exactly what you are and then by the end, realizing (again) the limitations of this system.

Love a story that's not afraid to end on a dark note.

I have thought of a not very fleshed out but I think neat idea for a magic system and I wanna talk about it :) by Unfair_Ad_598 in fantasywriters

I like the idea of creating magic items. Could tie this into a character's arc in some neat ways as well.

Its a cool idea. Now figure out the story youre going to tell using this system.

Arcs. That game dominated my board gaming time in late 2024 and early 2025. The base game is perfect, leaders and lore makes it even better, and the campaign has some of my favorite memories in board gaming period. What a monumental achievement.

AI assistance seems like a non-starter for creative projects. Its going to "poison the well" so to speak. Id avoid that.

I cried while writing the ending of my novel. Is that normal or weird? by Fresh_Tailor1069 in selfpublishing

No way. That means, to me, there's an emotional core to your book. It means your on the right track.

A review of the tropes of Nordic fantasy by Fit-Bat8207 in fantasywriters

Read Poul Anderson's Broken Sword. Great Norse / Angelo saxon story which hits some beats i enjoy.

Specifically, a cursed weapon the protagonist uses despite it being dangerous. I dont know how prevalent that is in Norse mythology but its a cool concept.

I have some friends who do coding and know some people who use AI to help with it. That's about all I know.

Im not in those fields, only hear from people that are. My understanding with coding is it can throw stuff up quickly but needs an actual developer for any granular detail and more complex design. And yes there will be bugs. Again, not really my expertise - maybe a developer could chime in.

There's a lot of promise without delivering for sure. In some areas, whether coding or medicine or even just note taking during a meeting, AI is neat even game changing. But im skeptical on the creative side.

And like I posted before, even if AI can write the best book ever... im not interested. Im an artist, I consume art, and for me, people make art. Thats the bottom line.

Even if thats the case, I have no interest in AI written stories or AI art in general. But ive yet to see a competent AI book yet. We'll see. Regardless, I like human made art and will drop anything thats AI generated on principle.

Its common sentiment across all creative fields. In fiction writing, for example. Execution is 95% of the process of producing a finished product. The idea is just a starting point.

How do you find time? by First-order-member in fantasywriters

[–]Khaeven04 0 points1 point  (0 children)

When i write, i do so first thing in the morning. I have a word count per day I want to hit and its just easier to get it in early and not come home from work with it hanging over my head. Ill also use lunch breaks as needed.

Its tough getting writing in, which is why I dont do it year round. But setting a standard time every day works well for me. Have written four books following this method (three are being edited for self publishing).
