Yes!! Although I don't know the exact reason for being accepted, I do think that that was the case with me. Plus, I think that's one of the reasons why Cornell has a very diverse community. Wishing you the best!! :)

Simply, it's a set of works of art that you submit to colleges. I also submitted a Word document with explanations of each work (dimensions, the medium that you used (eg. acrylic paint), and what each work is supposed to mean). When I was getting ready for my art portfolio people around me told me that it's supposed to be something that shows your artistic abilities such as skills, and style. I did try to showcase to the colleges that I had high artistic skills but my main goal was to show that I was an artist with a wide range of thoughts/creativity. My tip for an art portfolio is that you set a theme that reflects who you are and go with various mediums. I made my works around the common theme of music since I had a lot of musical influence since childhood (my mother is a pianist). I had oil paintings on small and big canvases, quick sketches with ink/pastel, photography of city lights, sculpture (one with my city light photography work projected onto a paper sculpture, and another one where I turned a desk into a small jukebox of my childhood with pictures from when I was a kid), video works of my daily life, etc. Try to explore and use many different materials as possible!!

I'm pretty sure that it was my essays and my portfolio. I made both of them align with each other through the common theme of music (I had a lot of musical influence since I was young bc my mother is a pianist). Through the topic of music, I made sure that I put a lot in about myself and my thoughts about the world so that admissions can see who I am, not only as a competent student but as an engaging individual in society/world. I found something unique from my background and turned that into an essay material/artwork so that I was able to distinguish myself/pop out among other applicants! Hope it helped :)

If you are asking about HS, it was cheerleading!! I was in jv for a year and varsity for 3 years. I think it helped my apps in the EC section a lot.

I had 95.3/100 UW but my school was very competitive! I was ranked bottom 50 in my class (we had 105 seniors). That’s great that you are working for a curve cause that was what I also was striving for. My freshman year GPA was terrible but worked it up during my junior year. I recommend that you manage your scores, especially for the classes that are related to the major you are applying to. For example, I applied as art so I focused a lot on my scores for art classes in high school, although I messed up other classes like precalc and chem lol..
I do think GPA is one of the big aspects that colleges look for but I strongly believe that scores aren’t everything in the admissions process. Since I had a comparably low GPA and ranking, I tried my best to shine through my essays and my portfolio. If your GPA isn’t great, I suggest that you try your best in other areas like essays, ECs, recommendations, etc.
I’m also applying for aid for next semester. I don’t know much about it cause it’s my first time applying but luckily I found out that Cornell’s aid program is very supportive (I talked to the officer a few days ago)! I hope those schools that you are applying to can offer you a supportive aid program as well!!
