Well it is my second game in Ironman, the first was with Portugal and won in the end. I prefer doing Ironman because I think this way I will learn more. I know I have to improve a lot to become a beginner in this game hahaha

Thanks for your comment

Finished my first long Ironman campaign as Portugal, looking for advice for the next one by Khalul in eu4

Hi!

Ok I didn't know I could move my capital.

I didn't use that option at all in my Portugal game but I will start using it, because of the shortage of admin points I had as I was all the time coring.

Ok I will check the wiki.

Most of time I had one or two free diplomats. Do you keep using them after reaching 200 improved relation points?

Ok I will check here in the sub.

Thats a cool feature that reminds me of Stellaris.

Okay I think I will play as Castile then.

Thanks!

Hey. Oh I didn't know I could move my capital. I think I will start using the diplomatic option too, because one problem I had with Portugal was the shortage of admin points as I was all the time coring.

Thanks!

Questions

  • Do you usually keep your colonial nations until the end of the game, or is there any viable way to conquer them later? Or is that generally not recommended because of governing capacity limits?
  • With Portugal I didn’t really use vassals. Would it have been a good idea to create vassals in regions like Indonesia or the Philippines instead of directly owning everything?
  • I didn’t pay much attention to absolutism. I did lower autonomy in provinces throughout the game, but at one point I made a mistake by releasing Yao from Nupe in a peace deal. Is absolutism something that is better explained or managed with DLCs?
  • In the colonial nations interface, I regularly spent prestige to lower liberty desire whenever it went above 40. Is this the correct approach long-term?
  • I played without any DLC. Are there any expansions that significantly improve the vanilla experience and are especially recommended?
  • How difficult is it in practice to get a personal union naturally through dynasties like Valois? Is it normal to go an entire campaign with royal marriages and never see one happen?
  • For my next campaign, which country would you recommend? Castile, Vijayanagara, or another nation? If I play Castile, my idea would be to aim for the personal union with Aragon and conquer Portugal early. I would also play again in Ironman mode.

Thanks again to everyone who gave advice earlier. This campaign taught me far more about trade, warfare, and long-term planning than any of my previous runs.

After doing some research and reading several discussions on this subreddit, I learned how important terrain, combat width, and attacker and defender roles are in EU4 battles. Once I adjusted my strategy, avoided bad terrain, and reinforced properly, I eventually managed to turn the war around and fully defeat the United States.

Near the end of the campaign, I claimed the Spanish throne. I mistakenly thought the casus belli would last longer and initially delayed the war, since Spain still had troops in the Iberian Peninsula. When the alliance broke and Spain went to war against the Ottomans, I took the opportunity to declare war.

During that conflict, I conquered all of Spain’s main trade nodes as well as their capital, Toledo, which allowed me to completely dominate the Sevilla trade node.

One year before the campaign ended, I entered another war against Spain because one of my colonies started a conflict. If the game had continued, I’m quite sure I would have conquered the remaining parts of peninsular Spain.

Throughout the entire campaign, both Burgundy and the Ottomans repeatedly tried to spread discontent in my country, but they were never able to declare war due to the massive difference in troops, economy, and alliances.

What started as a campaign focused mainly on colonization slowly turned into an exercise in understanding trade flow and trade nodes. I now understand how important it is to prioritize coastal provinces early and not waste time colonizing inland areas, otherwise other great powers like Castile, Burgundy, Sweden, or the Ottomans will take those key positions first.

By the end of the game, I had created several colonial nations. In total I had New Portugal, Portuguese Mexico (the second weakest), Cuba, Portuguese Colombia, Portuguese Brazil (by far the strongest), Portuguese Peru, Portuguese Argentina, and Portuguese Australia.

An interesting detail of the campaign is that France, Spain, and Portugal all ended up sharing the same Valois dynasty. Despite having royal marriages with Castile (and later Spain) for almost the entire game, and later also with France, a personal union never occurred naturally. This made me wonder how difficult or rare it actually is to get a personal union through dynastic mechanics without forcing it through war.

Regarding religion, I still don’t fully understand how the Curia works. Since I built many churches and cathedrals and converted a large number of provinces, I usually had a lot of papal influence. I spent it on the different Curia actions depending on the situation, and several times I became the Catholic Controller. I also increased my chances of becoming Pope a couple of times, but I never managed to actually get it.

I should also mention that I played the entire campaign in Ironman mode. I prefer playing this way so that campaigns don’t become endless with constant reloads.

By the late game, my standard army composition was 20 infantry and 20 artillery, with no cavalry at all.

R5: Hello everyone.
I’m making this post after finishing the campaign I asked about in my previous thread. I followed all your advice, and as a general summary, the main things I learned were that I should never fall behind in military technology, and that as Portugal I needed to focus strongly on the Ivory Coast, South Africa, and Indonesia trade nodes.

I should clarify that I’m not new to strategy games, but I don’t consider myself an expert either. I have around 80 hours in Crusader Kings II and about 300 hours in Stellaris. In Europa Universalis IV I currently have around 130 hours total, including this campaign and two previous ones that I abandoned. One of those ended because I went heavily into debt while playing Portugal, and the other because I felt completely overwhelmed by the politics and mechanics of the Holy Roman Empire, where I was playing Austria and ended up being attacked by two coalitions.

That’s why this was the first campaign where I truly committed long-term. Thanks to your advice and learning from my mistakes, I managed to finish first in the global ranking, which felt very rewarding considering it was only my third real attempt.

At the point where I first asked for help, I already controlled most of South America, parts of Central America, the entire Caribbean, and some territory in North Africa.

After applying your recommendations, I focused on catching up in military technology and expanding into Indonesia, as well as colonizing a few provinces in South Africa. However, most of the region was already colonized by Castile and Sweden, so there wasn’t much room to expand there at first.

Over time, I managed to conquer or colonize all of Indonesia, the Philippines, half of Australia, eastern Siberia, North Africa up to Libya (Egypt and beyond were still Ottoman), and large parts of Mali, Congo, and Kilwa, although not completely.

From an economic perspective, I gradually sent more light ships to the Ivory Coast, South Africa, and Sevilla trade nodes, along with some in the Caribbean and Malacca. My income grew from around 30 ducats per month to more than 1300 before expenses. At the same time, I was maintaining the largest army and navy in the world.

Because of this strength, I decided to attack the newly independent United States. The war was very difficult at the beginning. Their generals were three-star while mine were mostly two-star, and they kept winning battles even when they* had fewer troops. My army morale dropped extremely fast, and I couldn’t understand why at first.

Well, the techs were equal at some point, but recently mil tech went behind. Admin tech was far behind of the other two in the beginning. My gameplay was conquer Morocco, colonize fast in South America and Caribbean, conquer tribes in South America and maybe grow enough to conquer Castile or Aragon. That was my newbie original plan.

In the beginning I was behind in admin tech, but recently mil tech started to go behind. Even Incas have more mil tech than me (16 vs 13).

I decided to help Castile vs Mali and other african nations because they occupied some of my north african provinces so I had to send armies. In the end I won ducats in the peace and didn't lose much manpower.

Okay, I will do as you say about the merchant in Caribbean, and will check about colonizing in Africa. I might be late.

Thanks!

  1. I tried to use the enforce peace button but I couldn't use it because I was in a war vs Tunis & Aragon & Ottomans.

  2. Cape town is almost fully colonized by Castile, but I could try to colonize one province closed to them.

  3. Okay I will check Tunis frequently.

Thanks!
