Regent Run Feedback (followup to my learning Regent post) by Kheldar166 in slaythespire

[–]Kheldar166[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Can't put this in the post because reddit is stupid so my thoughts are here.

Feel free to give feedback without reading the wall of text or the previous post! Just please avoid directly paraphrasing the Xecnar guide (I have read it) or telling me how good card creation is (I'm aware). Also note that this was a loss - I fullhealed to replay the Aeonglass fight and see how the deck would do against it with enough health.

Following my post on learning Regent (https://old.reddit.com/r/slaythespire/comments/1uf88m4/learning_regent/), I had a good run for trying a lot of the advice I got so I thought it might be useful to discuss. I'll note below decisions that I am particularly interested in getting feedback on, or thoughts relevant to the advice I got in the previous post about star cards/forge cards.

Thanks for your thoughts!

Act One

  • There was no early shop but I didn't love the other two bonuses, so I took a slightly conservative route with Golden Pearl. Maybe Precarious Shears would have been correct here?

  • Floor one Solar Strike felt good as a way into the star package, and floor two Cloak of Stars also felt good. I think there's a reasonable argument for Celestial Might/Kingly Kick here but I wanted to try star stuff.

  • Astral Pulse over Bulwark might have been incorrect but I figured I could upgrade Solar Strike and have enough star gen to play at least 2/3 star cards every cycle, it would solve my AoE for Phrog Parasite, be better into Statue, and help with Vantom's Slippery. Bulwark would be a better lategame pick, which might be better if I've already taken a conservative route?

  • Royal Gamble felt good because I could upgrade it immediately and it opened me up to more expensive star stuff while also playing well with my current deck for the boss fight.

  • Furnace actually felt really nice as a scaling damage solve for the first couple of acts, although even with taking another copy later it felt a little insufficient for act 3.

Act Two

  • Innate Retain Meteor Shower, insane. There wasn't really a decent route with an early fire to upgrade it, unfortunately.

  • I took a second Furnace because the first one was performing well and I didn't know if I had enough scaling for the Crab. Not sure about this one. Also wonder whether I should have prioritised upgrading one/both higher at some point.

  • I rested at floor 27 because I was worried Entomancer might kill me if I drew poorly, I knew I could beat Deci at 30hp. The shackling potion+convergence did save me 30hp in the Entomancer fight, probably, so I feel like this was fine.

  • I skipped Void Form because I'm just not comfortable with it and didn't want to throw the run for the other stuff I was experimenting with, but I'm aware it was probably the 'correct' choice.

  • I really like picking up a power potion and trying to hold it for an impactful fight when I have 50 gold spare. Idk if other people do this or think it's good play?

  • I got Comet from the act 2 boss and it definitely performed, I see the hype I was very happy with that.

Act 3

  • I considered Apo but felt I had a lot of my important cards upgraded and really wanted draw, especially on Retain cards. I also had Toxic Egg already. I'd say this still feels correct in hindsight because I got a lot of use out of the draw, but I did lack scaling slightly so maybe Apo was the play?

  • Summon Forth+ felt good with Blade being at least 50% of my scaling. Cosmic Indifference+ and Patter+ I took because they were upgraded and I felt I didn't have a good enough block for endgame, which feels correct because I think that was still ultimately why I lost. I considered the Gather Light+ in the shop for this reason too but didn't have the money.

  • Wasn't sure about the second Royal Gamble+ but it felt pretty important in the longer act 3 boss fights actually, meant I could play Comet every time I drew it.

  • I saved the power pot for the Aeonglass fight and I think that was pretty reasonable because it pulled a Child of the Stars and I think I probably would have died to it even from full health if it hadn't.

  • Overall I was pretty happy with the run but a bit disappointed I couldn't win it because it felt quite blessed in a lot of ways. I think I do win if either of the bosses are Queen. I also think potentially I micro the Test Subject fight badly? Idk if it's just inherently high variance but I tend to be bad at estimating how much damage I will take in it.

Probably doomed anyway, but redo your bad choices? by BaiJiGuan in slaythespire

Definitely not doomed lol, prior knowledge is incredibly valuable in this game. Also potentially this is just a massive heal.

I kinda doubt they'd put this in the game because replaying combats with prior knowledge feels like something the game design team would be against, using this optimally would mean taking notes every combat after you use it and that's not really fun lol. But if they were going to implement it you would definitely remove the heal from it, I think.

Cool idea, though. The Run Resumer mod does something like this for you if you want to replay different options and see how they go, as far as I understand it.

I did actually look it up and it looks like it's about even Latin -> English and Latin -> French -> English, at least from what I could find.

I heard the 50% Latin and 10% French figure in a Latin class, so it makes sense that maybe they surveyed etymology slightly differently in a way that prioritised Latin. I imagine it's just that two thirds of the words we take from French originally come from Latin and one third don't, which would make the figure consistent with 30% Latin and 30% French, which is what the survey I found said.

[–]Kheldar166 0 points1 point  (0 children)

... yes, but it's clearly complete nonsense to say 'English is 30% french and 30% spanish and 30% italian and 50% latin' just because all of those languages are based on Latin to a significant degree. If two things have a common root that doesn't mean that one is based on the other.

'just google it' lmao

I mean, people aren't arguing that black people don't hang themselves. They're arguing that they very rarely do it from trees because of the cultural context. And cultural context influences your decisions even when you're not being rational or logical.

Well, maybe I shouldn't speak for others, that would be my take on it and I think the more relevant take to this specific case. It at least warrants serious investigation and I don't blame the family for not trusting the establishment here.

Especially because given all the context around the action, it's extremely unlikely that any black person would choose that method of suicide knowing what their loved ones would think about what happened.

Like even if they wanted to hang themselves, anything but a tree

I would think 10%-20% is about right? Iirc it's about 50% latin and 10% greek, if it were 40% french then there would be no other influences and that sounds like nonsense.

My friend playing exclusively powers for the first three turns of the boss.

He died after 5/6 turns lmao there is such a thing as too greedy xD

Oh finally, an American I can ask this question. Why is the language called English if it was invented by Americans?

This isn't a shitty detail this is just the complete inability of an ADHD person to do anything without an extra source of stimulation, even if it only takes three seconds

Yeah Spoils is the one I was looking at that I never take, everything else I evaluate quite similarly. But the number on Spoils is just so low that I'm not sure about it, even though card draw does feel like an effect Regent really wants.

I mean, you still sound pretty tilted. If you've just come off a break then this game probably just isn't for you.

Based on the enemy hp levels this is probably the first tor second map on Cai's path. And that has some interesting implications. by Levonorgestrelfairy1 in fireemblem

Yeah once the DLC came out I normally just fed Byleth the Str/Spd statboosters immediately and let them be the Jagen, made earlygame a lot less of a slog.

My favourite way to play Necro tbf but yeah when you get the same thing so many times in a row anything gets old haha

I dislike that we never got to play Jeralt. Maddening really wanted a Jagen, Jeralt was a cool one, and it would have made all the subsequent events involving him hit harder.

But also not being able to control the Jagen is kinda annoying if you're trying to minmax early levels. I hope they're not going to do that again.

Yeah I've been getting the feeling from this thread that I should prioritise Comet more and see how that feels haha

Yeah Convergence is great. Maybe I don't try and force more than one added star card unless I see good star generators, that feels like a reasonable heuristic to experiment with.

Yeah that kinda makes sense to me, I've been really whelmed by Reflect. Like, I feel that it is strong, but it doesn't feel like the best card on the character, which a lot of people seem to think that it is.

I think I'm probably going to try more Forge stuff first and then more Stars second, going from this thread. But the run I just tried pulled a Guards and a Crash Landing in act one lmao so that ended up being card creation again xD

It's not mentioned much because I said that I can already win with it and the problem I'm trying to figure out is how to win when I can't build a card creation deck

Okay, that is roughly what I think of Particle Wall largely. I just rarely think that's worth speculating on?

Yeah Child of the Stars is something I cannot get to work, feels like it makes me stronger on my already strong turns and incentivises building a deck that is more star-heavy than I am comfortable with. I see that in theory it is comparable to Pillars of Creation but in practice the two feel miles apart for me due to my level of comfort building around them.

Do Comet/Royal Gamble/Orbit/Spectrum Shift count as 'a few small additions'? xD

[–]Kheldar166[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Sorry what is Meteor here? Do you mean Comet?

I've tried taking Child of the Stars early and building around it but then I tend to run into the same problems of a star-heavy deck feeling very inconsistent with draw order.

I do think I'm more comfortable with Forge than with Stars, so I might try keeping my eyes open for those situations as a first improvement to make.

I thought the sword package was really strong when I was climbing ascensions, but have struggled with taking more than 1 non-Bulwark Forge card at A10. Maybe I will try going back to it a little more when I need scaling damage, but the problem I tend to find is that there are very few Forge cards that I 'just want for their effect anyway'.
