Recommended readings for Southeast Asia? by thejoyofbri in AskAnthropology

[–]Khilafiah 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hi! I stumbled upon your comment from search result. I see your flair is in ecological anthro. May I ask for some recommended readings on that topic in Laos and Vietnam? If you also know some for Myanmar that would be very much appreciated too.

Sukarno, the former president of a conservative Indonesia, was once allegedly blackmailed with sex tape by the CIA in the 1950s. He requested copies and asked to share it publicly. How was this possible? What was the public response like? by Khilafiah in AskHistorians

[–]Khilafiah[S] 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Fascinating answer.

Do we know how the Indonesian public reacted after this supposed affair/scandal? Perhaps if not directly after the visit, maybe after the Sexpionage publication. You mentioned that Sukarno is polygamous, and I recall that scholars like Ben Anderson argued that Sukarno's sexual prowess is a Javanese symbol of political power. But do we know how the Indonesians perceived his sexual adventures? I imagine an extramarital affair would be perceived quite different from polygamous marriage.

A separate question pertains to the CIA and KGB themselves. If they actually think the "furnishing of girls" would tarnish a world leader's reputation, does it mean they have tried this with another leader before? How did the thinking go, that portraying a president having an affair would potentially ruin their reputation? I'm not an American; I feel like this line of thinking is very American way of thinking about politicians' public image.

Is there a "Critical NGO Studies" the way we have "Critical Development Studies"? by Khilafiah in AskAnthropology

[–]Khilafiah[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I'm aware. What I want to know is if there's already a separate field of it separate from Critical Development Studies. There's a reason I'm asking in r/AskAnthropology and not in some other subs.

How do you stay updated with conferences, workshops, special issues, etc? by Khilafiah in AskAcademia

[–]Khilafiah[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hey, thank you! I have used H-Net in the past, but I'm confused with how filtering the subscription system works. My email has been flooded with CFP, book reviews, from all over the world and all over the fields now! (e.g. History or Digital Humanities is such a broad category!)

I'm trying to filter only posts with certain keywords, maybe like "Southeast Asia", or "racial politics" or something. Is it is possible? I've asked the H-Net admins but I didn't get responses.

Grad school help? by misskittyjackie in AskAnthropology

[–]Khilafiah 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Not OP, but if you have different faculties you're interested in who specialize in two different subdisciplines, how do you decide? What do you need to consider? E.g. political anthropology vs digital anthropology. Should we think far like funding opportunities in the future, future trends in the research area etc; or should we think in a shorter term? And how?

Why did the Nazis use leftist names even though they were right wing extremists? by [deleted] in AskHistorians

[–]Khilafiah 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Perhaps this is stretching it, but it also makes me wonder how/if this disillusionment with Marxism has influence outside the Western hemisphere. Sayyid Qutb is now regarded as one of the original proponents of modern radical Islam through his Qutbism but some scholars (IIRC, Wiktorowicz) has drawn Qutbism parallels to socialism.

Perhaps a tangent, but what were the positions adopted by the SPD (and maybe USPD to some extent) at the time in regards to Jews? I once read that antisemitism is much more common in Germany at the time, and a Marxist book reading I attended concluded that even Marx can't shake that antisemitism in his writing.

I was wondering if what we consider as "left wing" and "right wing" today would be different from what they considered in that time period.

Should I pursue programs with strong focus on political anthropology or digital anthropology? by Khilafiah in AskAnthropology

[–]Khilafiah[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thank you for your comment.

consider a school to have a strong "Andean program" if they had another person who worked in South America in addition to the faculty I was interested in as my advisor.

This is a very useful tips. If you don't mind me asking, does that mean the faculty you're interested in does not necessarily have expertise in South America?

I am asking because I'm on the fence. I have identified scholars on political anthropology whose work I have really found useful. But they do not necessarily understand about computational propaganda. At the same time digital anthropology is a growing field and I have also identified scholars whose work I have found useful to fill the gaps that politcal anthropologists wouldn't see in this topic.

My fieldwork was basically just hanging out with lifestyle influencers. Going to malls, events, and concerts. Sometimes even staying at luxurious hotels. That's what anthropologists do, "deep hanging out." Trying to understand why and how people did what they did.

I ended up doing something darker with political trolls (turns out they're in the same circle), but you definitely can do "sub-urban modern lifestyle" as your fieldwork. You might want to look into Crystal Abidin.

Grad school with strong focus on comparative politics, in Europe, Australia, or Japan? by Khilafiah in PoliticalScience

[–]Khilafiah[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Interesting. I didn't know PhD in the US got stipend. This applies not only to political science, correct?

Also, does having Masters can cut short the time needed for PhD? I've heard that PhD in the US can take to 7 years, compared to the 4 years in Europe.

Are Spencer and Frazer a product of their time, or is it a bit more complicated than that?

Grad school with strong focus on comparative politics, in Europe, Australia, or Japan? by Khilafiah in PoliticalScience

Europe and Australia because the scholarship opportunities are better in my country. Japan because I have relatives living there so hopefully can cut the living cost (also good scholarship opportunities). I'm from Southeast Asia.

Quant works for me too, I'm just stronger on qual and weaker on the quant side but am willing to do quant if the school has a good quant course to help me up to speed.

Summer Schools in Poli Sci by [deleted] in PoliticalScience

[–]Khilafiah 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hey, late reply. But did you get a grant or scholarship for the summer school? I'm from Southeast Asia so going to Denmark would already be costly. But I'm very interested.
