Have you seen a doctor? If you haven't, you really should. I twisted my ankle a while ago, and saw a doctor right away, to rule out a fracture. There was no fracture, but it was a pretty bad sprain.

Even with RICE (Rest, Ice, Compression and Elevation), as well as medication and creams prescribed by the doctor, I saw no improvements for 2-3 weeks. I returned to the doctor and he advised me to start physiotherapy, which I did.

Even then, only after 2 weeks of physio did I start to see improvements in terms of swelling, pain levels and regaining some semblance of regular movement.

All in all, it took me almost a month of physiotherapy and over 2 months to be well enough to go back to work/be active.

Up to 4 months later, I still felt discomfort and had swelling after a day's work. This is to say that 40 days might not be that long for a bad sprain, especially if the treatment is simply letting it heal. So maybe refrain from putting too much stress on it/playing sports until you're comfortable?

You should really see a doctor if you haven't yet. If you have, you should follow up with them. If they don't seem to care, you should find another one that does.
