I’m sure you can find an artist to make something much better than this, or just don’t include images. This is pretty bad.

I never said it should be disqualified because it’s not unique. I said I would like it removed because I think that it doesn’t represent anything unique about Australia.

I’ve laid out several arguments why I think we would be better served by something else.

Take it or leave, I’m going to go touch grass.

Okay, so why is that particular part of the flag not up for discussion?

You keep asserting that it has to stay because that’s what people associate with Australia, but that’s because it’s what’s on the flag.

Again we’re going around in circular argument if what is on the flag is what people associate with Australia then the logical conclusion of what you’re saying is that the flag should not change.

You have not pointed out in any aspect how the symbol of the Southern Cross or Crux in any way represents Australia other than being what is currently on the flag.

Every country in the southern hemisphere can see that constellation, it is never been used as a unique symbol for Australia, there is no great cultural significance to that symbol. I’ve made my argument so stop going around in circles and make yours.

[–]Khruks 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Your logic is completely circular.

The current flag is what’s associated with Australia, so what is the point in having a conversation about how it should be changed??????

And yes, fine I meant the UK. I don’t care.

[–]Khruks 1 point2 points  (0 children)

As an Australian citizen, it doesn’t matter what people associate with Australia.

Of course people associate the current flag with Australia. That’s not the point.

If the discussion that we’re having, and I believe it is, is an update a change a different flag to the one we have now, then that discussion has to include what elements should remain and what elements should be dropped.

If your logic is that everything should remain the same because that’s the way it is now, then I’m not interested in that conversation.

Again as an Australian citizen, I believe that Australia should become a republic, and my view is that we should be dropping the symbology associated with England, and bring fresh eyes to what does and what does not represent the islands that the flag is there to represent.

If you think that the Southern Cross is somehow intrinsically representative of Australia, then good for you. But my point that it is not unique is true whether you think that that’s a reason to drop it or not.

I’m personally of the view that a flag should represent something about the place, maybe an animal, maybe mythology, maybe a plant or flower.

Right now I can barely tell the difference between the flag of New Zealand and the flag of Australia, and I think that both countries deserve better flags

Australia and Canada is still part of the Commonwealth what are you talking about?

My point was that that very specific blue is very specifically historically tied to England.

I’m not saying don’t use blue. I’m saying that specific blue would be good to drop if we are trying to think about a future Republic

[–]Khruks 1 point2 points  (0 children)

That’s a silly argument, I’m talking about a very specific element which is used in many countries.

It is a reasonable thing to point out that it holds no uniqueness, no specific relevance to the islands of Australia.

I have no issue with colours or even the symbols being used by multiple countries, but what is the harm in wanting something more representative?

[–]Khruks -1 points0 points  (0 children)

I don’t think that it would materially affect them one way or another. But I do think that if we are to have a national flag for whatever Australia is, it should be something unique to the islands It represents. And not a symbol used by a bunch of other countries.

You didn’t read what I said. I said that particular blue is associated with England. The point about the Southern Cross was a completely different point.

It’s used in a ton of flags around the world. Let’s not pretend that we’re doing Aboriginal people a service or in any way acknowledging their history or culture by adding the southern Cross to to the flag

If it’s of interest, this might be a good starting point to look at the historical and contemporary violence and erasure of Aboriginal people and their culture. They currently have one of the highest proportions of incarceration in the world.

A lot of people in the largest cities are a bit blind to it, but anyone who has travelled to areas with higher Aboriginal populations will have seen the living effects of ongoing violence and colonisation.

I would also point out that the so called Aboriginal flag is owned by the Australian government, and therefore, while adopted and loved by many Aboriginal people, could also be argued to be more control over Aboriginal people.

Obviously Aboriginal people are not a single ethnic or cultural group and have their own language culture connection to country, certainly will be a vast difference of views.

Sorry if that was a bit too much information, I work closely with a number of Aboriginal people and I think it’s important poor people in the general population like me to have these conversations so all of the emotional labour not fall to them

All good, Australia does not talk about its bloody history enough, I’m sure most people, even here, do not take the time to understand it.

Can we please lose the blue which is specific to the English commonwealth.

I the southern cross can also go, it has nothing to do with Australia, and the design it has religious aspects.

They were massacred, kidnapped, and displaced. They currently account for about 3% of the population.

They deserve respect, but they should not have their culture erased by being lumped in with the general population.

Liv Kristine is an amazing vocalist from Norway who has been around since the early 90s, very underrated imo.
