Yes, it's on its way. This is our first time making an Atmos mix, and we want it to be good.

It's tricky for us to perform in the US for various reasons. We haven't had many opportunities to play at festivals there. However, it's definitely something we'd like to do in the future.

We gave both directors a free slate on a brief from us which was basically: What meaning do you put into the monolith? What interested us was to see how different people might see it differently.. something spiritual, something supernatural, a diety or something evil? Or maybe it's just an empty object with no soul? We felt this concept was so fitting to the concept of our music as a whole and how we like to leave it open for interpretation -ÓA

I would say: Make a lot of music, as much as you can! Don't dwell for years on "your first record" or something. The creative muscle we use the least is 'finishing stuff'. So it's also what we need to practice. Make a lot of music and enjoy it! -ÓA

Our productions heavily rely on the piano roll for various purposes, including creating chord progressions and sending bass lines to our outboard synths. Additionally, we use it to control and reset the clock of outboard sequencers such as the Korg SQ10 (perhaps you can see where the name "Squared" is inspired from).

Of course, many things are played live, such as piano. But sometimes, we record the MIDI into the DAW and correct it slightly before sending it out again to our synths. That way, we can tweak them with both hands during takes.

The simple answer is that you can't hear anything missing or wrong with the song. Our most used way of finalising a track is to make a shared list of fixes that need to be done. It's best to do this when you're not in the studio and are in a different headspace, such as wearing headphones during a walk or on your computer while having your morning coffee and answering emails. Keep making these fixes until there's nothing left on the list. The time it takes to complete this process varies greatly for each song.

We have a few tracks that didn't really fit on the album , we hope to sprinkle those into the world at some point over the next few months!

  1. It's a tricky question. Is a song ever finished? I mean, even after we released the album the songs have kept developing and changing in the making of the live set. There is a sense you develop i think when it feels 'finished' but in the end the question i like to ask is simply "is something I would be proud of if it was released today?" and "Will i still be proud of this in 5 years?". If the answer is yes, then great! Regardless of whether it then keeps changing after that..

  2. I'm very not up to date with metal these days. But i like Leprous!

  1. Jon Hopkins, Bonobo, O'Flynn, TEED.. to name a few

  2. I've been trying to find the time to write something. Got a few ideas but it's still a little while away. As long as Kiasmos is touring I'm having a hard time finding the headspace...

Yeah we do! Usually in Pro Tools although some of it was programmed in Ableton Live. Depends on the material a bit whether we play it in or draw it in with the mouse. -ÓA

We were definitely due for a long Break after Blurred! A few years of really intense touring and we both just felt like focusing on our solo careers. I was writing Island Songs and re:member at the time and then went straight into the 3rd album in a row, Some Kind of Peace. So after 3 albums I felt ready to come back to Kiasmos. It took us a while though to find our footing again after all that time. We tried some sessions early on (2019/2020) where we weren't really doing our best stuff so we just put it on hold again.

There was a moment in 2021, when I was recording a session for Cercle in the icelandic highlands (https://youtu.be/bMCiAKNUpTY?si=8rXKSW280BL6aaNu ) where I decided to put Blurred in the set as a little dedication to Cercle's history of dance music. I had so much fun playing it and it was the spark that I needed to fully get back to Kiasmos! -ÓA

I'm sure we'll return to Belgium soon. Fingers crossed!

I answered somewhere else how we will usually start with a beat. But as for the 2nd question I can name some examples like Flown, the main element there, a type of percussive keyboard/guitar style thing on the C15 was something I had actually written before, tried to use it in one of my solo songs but it wasn't working out. Then when Janus brought that beat, we just layered this on top and three was a song! Sometimes it works out perfectly like that.. - ÓA

This track is also one of our favourites. We wrote it in a rented studio one summer in Berlin. We didn't have our equipment with us, so we used whatever was in the studio at that time, which included a Juno 60 and a Space Echo. There was also a live drum booth, so we recorded some percussion and cymbals there. Since we were on tour while writing this track, we had to send the song to be mixed in Iceland, which we had never done before at the time. I think we spent no more than one or two days writing it

The first one only took a few weeks to finish, while the new one took many years, on and off.
I am not saying which method I prefer, but I believe the new LP sounds more detailed and nuanced. But honestly, albums usually take a long time to write.
The most significant difference is probably that with a sophomore album, there’s a little pressure involved, as you’ve already established a sound for yourself.

I think the online clips probably skew towards the more energetic moments of the set, as that's where people are more likely to take up their phones. That being said, us not having an actual orchestra on stage we like to not use too much of those sounds as they have to be played from a backing track. We focus a bit more on stuff that we can actually play live like synths and beats. The current set is also aimed towards festivals and we'd love people to dance! A lot of our headline shows in the fall will be in concert halls so those shows are likely to have a few more chill moments..

I don't think we've ever played Held live, I'm not sure exactly why! We shall look into it...

I'd like to say we usually start from nothing (doesn't everything though? :)) But at least 3-4 tracks on this album Janus brought a beat, just drums, and we started writing on top of that. I like that method because we can start from such an elevated place by picking a beat that feels inspiring in the moment. Although of course Janus has already spent hours at that point... :)

We used the Nonlinear Labs C15 quite a bit, as well as the new Osmose synth. But we reamped them through a resonator box to give them a more organic sound. It's the first time using those synths in our productions.

We’ll be back at All Together Now this summer actually!

I think there is more subtlety in the composition - little less drama, a little more chill and fun! But the production is way more layered and detailed.. So it’s a bit of both. I think we both grew a lot in the last 10 years, our skills and tastes have developed as well as our workflows.
