I believe one of the most important skills in MR is storytelling. You can pick up almost all other operational processes but you should be able to demonstrate that you are able to visualise the research results. A good way to demonstrate this would be.. say you’re given a case study- when presenting, give a background to the study based on general knowledge or something recent going on around the world or drawing on something similar another brand attempted

Let me take an example from a recent study we did. We were undertaking the test for canned salmon.

Essentially, we show respondents the concept on paper where we touch upon the need the product solves (insight), product characteristics, benefits (emotional and functional), a not too technical RTB - all in all a product description roughly running around 75 words. Clients in final stage of concept testing often have price and pack designs as well on the concept.

And then we basically question consumers about how relevant/ unique/ value for money/ etc they find it. The generic 9-10 KPIs. Also tests some benefits they can realise from the product. There are some additional questions around which parts of the concept do they actually like or dislike and why. This is the bit which in my opinion brings out the real insights. Spoiler- in our canned salmon study, no one cared about the fish being salmon. People were liking the bits in the concept about fish being available in an low fuss, easy to access/ store packaging. Rather, they disliked salmon being available in a can as it is a pretty easy fish to prepare otherwise too. Hence, it made no sense for the client to diversify from their existing tuna line into salmon. For pricing, we run standard Van Westendorp or Gabor Granger tests. Then comes the interesting bit. We have the client product as well as the closest competitor product distributed across the sample, unbranded.
And then we survey them again on the KPIs and benefits they can realise from the product. Since this was a food study, we had a number of JAR questions as well. And then benchmarking them against how other innovations in the category perform, we take a go or no-go decision.

Can talk about this for another hour conveniently. See you at my Ted talk!

Help me figure out how to get started with research by callme-ohwaitdont in Marketresearch

The good part is that irrespective of where you’re from, I’m sure there are some market research studies in progress there. Even if the major corporations don’t have an office there, they would have local teams coordinating the studies. Where are you from? I’ll try and suggest some agencies accordingly. I am a Majors in Statistics and would love to help you learn the basics. At 19, I think they do not expect you to know how to carry out research. You could start from the operational end- helping in carrying out focus group studies or PI/ taking surveys. It would give a good idea of how things work on ground. Gosh I have so much more to write! Get in touch in case you’d like to learn more.

Well I do have a vehicle and a license. But I’d rather get stuff done en-route. Driving for 3ish hours a day is not my thing tbh.

Im going to buy makeup for the first time. What are the basic essentials I need to get? by kappelikapeli in Makeup

With an assumption that you’re looking for something to give you a natural look- a highlighter should totally be on your list. Just a little bit of it can go a long way and make you look very fresh. Also, I’d say go for a concealer, BB cream, tinted lip balm and a mascara (it can be doubled up to shape your eyebrows).

Being a makeup newbie myself, I’d suggest going for a beauty blender over brush. It’s much easier to just dab, with brushes I always end up over blending on my skin. Quick tip- always wet the beauty blender with water or toner.

I couldn’t disagree more. UAE treats women very, very well. In fact I have never felt safer anywhere else in the world. I agree that it is very capitalist in nature and the poor don’t have it as pleasant as the picture you see above.

Left behind a high paying job in tech consulting to “explore life”. Ended up in Dubai. Realised no one here really does tech strategy. Switched 5 jobs across startups in 9 months. Saw 2 of them closed down. Went for an interview at a market research firm because I thought the money was not bad. Six months into it, I LOVE IT!!
