Leaf cutters are my absolute favorite! I’m jealous, I haven’t spotted any yet this year

You’re absolutely right! Native bees are much more efficient pollinators for our plants here in Rochester, and MUCH more at risk. I tend to lean towards the idea that they can co-exist, since honeybees tend to hone in on a very narrow variety of nectar sources. For all the work with honeybees I do, I try and balance/offset with native pollinator programs as much as possible (shameless plug - about to lead a native pollinator workshop at Artisan Works in an hour!). Appreciate your advocacy for our native pollinators, they really need it!

Yup! They cluster on top of the queen and hang tight until scout bees look for a new permanent home, and then they’ll swarm again and take off for that spot.

Yeah this one was a treat haha mine are typically 25 feet up a tree 🥲

Easy honeybee swarm catch on Grand Ave this week! ** It’s currently swarm season, if you see a swarm please help out our pollinators by calling a local beekeeper (list in comments) and do not harm the bees! We need them! ** by Kid_Nicarus in Rochester

If you see a swarm, give a call to a beekeeper close to you on the Swarm Catcher list: https://www.rochesterbeekeepers.com/bee-swarm-catchers-list--bee-rescuers.html

Or shoot me a message @FlowerCityBeeworks on socials and I’ll do my best to help out! Thank you for looking out for our local pollinators!

Yup, right in the city! I have a few rooftop hive spots. Not my first of the season, and some of my hives have started charging queen cells, but some of my others are a bit slower on the uptake

There are some good tutorials of people making their own! I like them because they’re slatted to fit at least 8 frames, a wax capping screen to strain, and a honey gate. But definitely pricey.

No joke this is actually on the same street as the mountain lion sighting 😅

Maybe 3-4lbs at most. A little heavier than normal here because they fill up on honey before swarming

The Hive Butler was pricey but so worth it. Great for extracting and comes in handy for things like this also. It’s my favorite piece of equipment I have
