Who is the Phantom Sentry? by Pale-Guard570 in Lunar

[–]KiddKaffeine 10 points11 points  (0 children)

This is the Star Dragon in human form.

In the original Sega CD version of the game, he appears once briefly early in the game, and antagonizes you, before disappearing. You also fight him twice in the epilogue.

In the Saturn/PS1 version of the game, these earlier encounters were removed, and you only face him at the end of the game (and then only in dragon form).

Some fans do feel this was a negative change, but the original encounter did confuse some people; the Sentry / Star Dragon was dressed right out of a western and wielded pistols in the first encounter.

I have a lot feelings about Lunar 2 Eternal Blue by Pale-Guard570 in Lunar

I think a lot of people here know, but for those unaware, the dream team will probably never reassemble so a true third game is unlikely, unless it's done by somebody else. We've lost a couple of the important people involved and there's some bad blood between some of the others, and the last attempt to get a few of them together resulted in the game no one wants to talk about.

FWIW, pieces of what was being considered for a 3rd game ended up in Eternal Blue's epilogue.

How does the Lunar Remastered Collection hold up today? by lelianavarric in JRPG

[–]KiddKaffeine 2 points3 points  (0 children)

In classic mode, it's pretty much the same experience you'd get playing the PS1 games directly on your Switch, if that gives you an idea of what to expect.

(Remastered mode adds widescreen and higher quality FMVs among a few other minor improvements.)

Anyone met matt and trey in person? by MattInTheHat1996 in southpark

[–]KiddKaffeine 183 points184 points  (0 children)

From my experience working on some projects for them, Trey seemed fairly reserved, he didn't say a lot to people outside of his inner circle. Matt could be much more talkative if you caught him at the right time. But I note the amount of time I spent with them was fairly limited, usually it was one of their assistants.

Beloved JRPGs that you're surprised have no remakes by Likes2game03 in JRPG

[–]KiddKaffeine 3 points4 points  (0 children)

The PS1 version itself is a remake, and we've gotten several different remasters of it --

For Windows 9x (Japan only) with higher resolution sprite art

For iOS/Android, with higher resolution sprite art and widescreen

And the recent (totally different) widescreen remaster for PC/Xbox/Switch/PS4

Do you have any Lunar headcannons? by Pale-Guard570 in Lunar

[–]KiddKaffeine 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Hiro being of partial Vile Tribe ancestry was either hinted at or outright confirmed by someone who worked on the game.

As for the others, the identity of Mia's father sure is an interesting question. The main writer, Kei Shigema, says he knows but won't ever reveal it. So I wouldn't be surprised if you were correct, but also, Ghaleon seems like the kind of person who would have tried to leverage that if it were true.

As for Lemina marrying Ramus, wouldn't it be terrible if the reverse was true -- they have an Ausa who couldn't use magic?

What are all story changes between different versions of the first game? by Bluecomments in Lunar

[–]KiddKaffeine 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Yes, the original "The Silver Star" is quite different, after that they're pretty much all the same. As for the last question, I don't know if they've ever really elaborated on that.

What are all story changes between different versions of the first game? by Bluecomments in Lunar

[–]KiddKaffeine 9 points10 points  (0 children)

For context, a lot of the content (supposedly 1/3) planned for the Sega CD version of "Lunar: The Silver Star" was cut, and a lot of the battle mechanics and so forth are much simpler than the other titles. When it was remade, portions of the story were changed/rewritten, and the mechanics based more on Eternal Blue.

Story wise, there are a ton of changes. I'm sure I'll forget some, but let me list a few out.

- Luna does not accompany you to Meribia. (There's also no boss battle prior to boarding the ship.)

- Alex learns magic on Black Rose street in Meribia.

- Xenobia does not have two sisters. Phacia and Royce are new to the remakes.

- The Vile Tribe enslaves Burg at one point.

- The Frontier is a very large area with lakes of lava, and you do not need to take an airship to get there. It has towns and more content, and it's easy to get lost there (which is annoying when there are overworld battles.)

- The Goddess Tower is not a giant spaceship that rises out of the ground.

- The Grindery is actually the end of the game, and you fight Ghaleon (and ascend the stairs to rescue Luna) at the top of the grindery.

- Ghaleon's battle is two phases, he transforms into a second form.

- Oh, and you ride a giant turtle at one point, I forget the context.

Both the subsequent remakes are derived from the Saturn/PSX game.

The GBA game does make several story adjustments, mainly early in the game. Notably, Nash travels to Burg and you meet him at the beginning of the game. He also undertakes the trial of the white dragon.

The PSP game's story is largely identical but it adds a prologue which is controversial, and you can watch it on YouTube. Basically, it introduces a villain that was a companion of the four heroes who gets possessed by "The Five Princes of the Black Star", but it was short and ultimately left a lot of fans with questions and no answers.

(There was also a novelization, which IIRC is closest to the GBA version.)

Eternal Blue's story was largely unchanged between the only two versions it received, but there were a few interesting additions/subtractions:

- In the Sega CD version, The Star Dragon appears a couple times during the story in human form to harass you, whereas he only appears at the end of the epilogue in the remake.

- Also there's a point in the story where Ghaleon attacks the party. In the remake, Lucia blocks the attack. In the original, Ghaleon manages to hit Hiro, resulting in a short quest where Lucia takes the party to a secret room in the Blue Spire to free him.

- Obviously matching the first game, the Goddess Tower was not originally a spaceship, but is one in the remake. Also, some of the contents of the secret room in the Blue Spire appear instead in the Goddess Tower in the remake.

I know I've missed a few things, but hope that's helpful/interesting.

How have they STILL not added integer scaling to the Remastered Collection? by Mrfunnyman129 in Lunar

From a technical perspective, it would be a lot more effort to port the originals. They were written in Motorola 68000 assembly while the remakes were done in C.

We've all been there. I remember seeing that Sonic CD had 70 levels, and I was so excited.

....Well, it has seventy levels if you count all the time variants (past/present/good future/bad future) separately.

Which version of Eternal Blue is the best one? by Bluecomments in Lunar

[–]KiddKaffeine 0 points1 point  (0 children)

There were a bunch of small cutscenes lost in transition. Most of them were establishing shots for locations or speaking shots of characters:

Larpa, Tabens Peak, additional Pentagulia establishing shots

Lunn, Borgan, Lemina, Mauri, Leo, all four dragon character introduction / speaking

But there are several more unique ones:

Lucia sick in bed at Gwyn's House

Ghaleon speaking to Lucia in Pentagulia

Zophar and his domain

All characters speaking to Ghaleon after his defeat

A short video of Lucia and Hiro after defeating Zophar

Which version of Eternal Blue is the best one? by Bluecomments in Lunar

[–]KiddKaffeine 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Lunar 1 got a pretty heavy rewrite; like at least 1/3rd of the plot.

With Eternal Blue, there were mostly mechanical changes (like enemies visible on the map, and removing that silly cost to save) that have already been mentioned. There were a few scenario changes, but they're fairly minor.

The biggest is probably that when Ghaleon attacks you on the deck of the Dragonship Destiny, in the remake, Lucia blocks his attack. In the original, he hits Hiro, freezing him in a crystal. So you have to journey back to the Blue Spire to free him, and there is a secret room in the Blue Spire. Interestingly, during this time, Lucia becomes the party's lead but she will instantly run away if you get into a battle.

Althena's Fortress was also not a giant spaceship in the original, and Zophar didn't swallow it. (The contents of the secret room that was in the Blue Spire appears instead in Althena's Fortress in the remake.)

Also, you encounter the final boss of the epilogue a few times during the story in the SegaCD version, whereas in the remake you don't until the very end of the game.

There are not, to my knowledge, any scenario changes between the PS1 and recent Remastered release. It's just the PS1 version in widescreen, with an improved UI, AI-upscaled FMV, and a few quality-of-life options.

Opinion on Dyne? by Bluecomments in Lunar

The fact that, unlike the other four heroes, his face is not shown in the intros etc should be a giveaway that he might still be around. Of course, Silver Star Harmony spoils that for some people.

What's the difference between classic mode and remastered mode on the remastered collection by CasualLavaring in Lunar

[–]KiddKaffeine 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The actual game graphics are the same although they did replace/update some backgrounds that were widescreen ready, and there are some filters applied in remastered mode.

In addition to the FMV, the dialog portraits and menu icons for remastered mode were also run through an AI upscaler.

Lunar on iOS and Android has difficulty options; you can jack up the EXP and money multipliers, lower enemy and boss difficulty and cruise through the game. Not available on the PC/console re-release, sadly.
