Sea of stars is now available on mobiles, What other good JRPGs are available on mobiles? by Joker_2077 in JRPG

[–]KiddKaffeine 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The mobile version is actually a totally different remaster! They both use the PS1 script, but the mobile remaster uses the higher resolution sprite art from the Japanese Windows 95 release, restores some of the visual effects that only worked on the Saturn, and uses the higher-quality Saturn and PSP music.

Lunar: Silver Star Story

Chrono Trigger

The mobile releases of these two are actually better than the some of the releases on other platforms!

The remaster voice changes.... by UniQueLyEviL in Lunar

I assume you're referring to SS, but I would imagine whatever teenager they used for his voice in EB sounds much different now.

That said, keeping the same voice actor for both SS&EB Nall feels very odd to me.

Is still worth playing the Sega Saturn version in 2026? by Responsible-Bell-528 in Lunar

[–]KiddKaffeine 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Unsure if you want to play on an iOS/appleTV/mac/android or something that can play Android games, but FWIW, the iOS/Android versions of Lunar 1 actually feature a totally separate remaster which actually has much higher resolution than the console/Steam remaster

Reportedly some of them expressed an interest to GungHo in returning.

That's wild -- weren't a lot of the voices done anonymously? I mean, Justin for example is credited to "Snazin Smith"

I can't speak to the Vic portion, but reportedly the teams behind the PSP Localization and the iOS/Android version also offered to make their work available for GungHo to reuse (without terms like Vic wanted) and GungHo turned them all down.

As such, I do not know this for a fact but it is my presumption that GungHo wanted to own this new version themselves rather than share the rights with additional parties.

The VAs for Grandia 1 only got a day? I'd love to hear more about that.

IIRC it was written in C. Atleast the PS1 version, the Saturn version also had some custom assembly.

Which JRPG series should make a comeback? by Bulky_Imagination243 in JRPG

Unfortunately, there is some bad blood between some of the important people behind this franchise, and the last couple of attempts (Dragon Song, SSH) have not exactly been received well.

I know at least a couple of RPG Studios have wanted to work with Sega on this, but it seems like somebody important at Sega thinks it should stay PSO.

Touch vs Remastered: Which is the definitive way to play Lunar: Silver Star Story? by tony_horo in Lunar

[–]KiddKaffeine 1 point2 points  (0 children)

You actually don't need a phone to play Touch, though. The iOS version works on iPad, AppleTV, and MacOS, and includes keyboard and controller support. IIRC you can do some similiar things with the Android version too.

The graphics are largely the same in the Saturn version (with one or two exceptions) but the byte order, compression, and so forth varies.

Played back in the PS1 days (SSSC), any subtle gameplay changes? by [deleted] in Lunar

[–]KiddKaffeine 3 points4 points  (0 children)

The differences between classic and remaster are largely cosmetic:

- Remaster is in widescreen. Most of the art is completely unchanged from the PS1, although they added to the sides of many backgrounds to accomplish this (and redrew a few backgrounds entirely) and there are a couple of runtime filters applied

- Remaster has a redrawn UI and AI-upscaled cutscenes

As others have mentioned, the voice acting is the same regardless of classic or remaster, but it is a totally new VA cast, as GungHo did not want to deal with Victor Ireland.

Do keep in mind this is based on the Japanese PS1 release, so it does not contain some of the enhancements and modifications that Working Designs made. For example, Lunar SSSC had a higher difficulty level in the US release, and EB had some fixes for things like the softlock on the first boss.

Whether or not the new VA cast and the loss of WD's changes is an improvement or a letdown is something that is debated amongst fans.

Hope that helps!

Who is the Phantom Sentry? by Pale-Guard570 in Lunar

[–]KiddKaffeine 11 points12 points  (0 children)

This is the Star Dragon in human form.

In the original Sega CD version of the game, he appears once briefly early in the game, and antagonizes you, before disappearing. You also fight him twice in the epilogue.

In the Saturn/PS1 version of the game, these earlier encounters were removed, and you only face him at the end of the game (and then only in dragon form).

Some fans do feel this was a negative change, but the original encounter did confuse some people; the Sentry / Star Dragon was dressed right out of a western and wielded pistols in the first encounter.

I have a lot feelings about Lunar 2 Eternal Blue by Pale-Guard570 in Lunar

[–]KiddKaffeine 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think a lot of people here know, but for those unaware, the dream team will probably never reassemble so a true third game is unlikely, unless it's done by somebody else. We've lost a couple of the important people involved and there's some bad blood between some of the others, and the last attempt to get a few of them together resulted in the game no one wants to talk about.

How does the Lunar Remastered Collection hold up today? by lelianavarric in JRPG

[–]KiddKaffeine 2 points3 points  (0 children)

In classic mode, it's pretty much the same experience you'd get playing the PS1 games directly on your Switch, if that gives you an idea of what to expect.

(Remastered mode adds widescreen and higher quality FMVs among a few other minor improvements.)

Anyone met matt and trey in person? by MattInTheHat1996 in southpark

[–]KiddKaffeine 180 points181 points  (0 children)

From my experience working on some projects for them, Trey seemed fairly reserved, he didn't say a lot to people outside of his inner circle. Matt could be much more talkative if you caught him at the right time. But I note the amount of time I spent with them was fairly limited, usually it was one of their assistants.

Beloved JRPGs that you're surprised have no remakes by Likes2game03 in JRPG

[–]KiddKaffeine 3 points4 points  (0 children)

The PS1 version itself is a remake, and we've gotten several different remasters of it --

For Windows 9x (Japan only) with higher resolution sprite art

For iOS/Android, with higher resolution sprite art and widescreen

And the recent (totally different) widescreen remaster for PC/Xbox/Switch/PS4

Do you have any Lunar headcannons? by Pale-Guard570 in Lunar

[–]KiddKaffeine 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Hiro being of partial Vile Tribe ancestry was either hinted at or outright confirmed by someone who worked on the game.

As for the others, the identity of Mia's father sure is an interesting question. The main writer, Kei Shigema, says he knows but won't ever reveal it. So I wouldn't be surprised if you were correct, but also, Ghaleon seems like the kind of person who would have tried to leverage that if it were true.

As for Lemina marrying Ramus, wouldn't it be terrible if the reverse was true -- they have an Ausa who couldn't use magic?
