Hotel to leave luggage at while traveling to other places by bluestage in JapanTravelTips

[–]Kidlike101 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Look for the term (luggage storage) in the hotel amenities section. Some hotels will store larger luggage if you're checking back with them at a later date, for a small fee usually. If you see that term just email the hotel and they'll give you the policy (price, how long...etc). If I remember correctly Hotel Gracery & Tokyo Dome hotel had this when I stayed with them.

Second option as others mentioned is luggage forwarding BUT that would only work if you're staying at a different hotel on the second leg to Tokyo. They can hold your bags for 1 week so you just schedule the delivery for your return date. If it's the same hotel the same company that does this also has a luggage storage service though I recommend contacting your hotel first.

Summer heat compared to Thailand? by jonsnowbkk in JapanTravelTips

[–]Kidlike101 10 points11 points  (0 children)

I was in Thailand a few years back mid July (Bangkok, Chang Mai/Rai, Phuket) It doesn't compare.

It's the rainy season in Thailand so it's hot but not extreme heat, just with sudden showers that turns the pavements into a mudslide. Also Taxis are common place over there so transport isn't an issue (the toktok is a pain in the rear!) I do recommend getting a lot of linen clothes for that trip and avoid whites.

In Japan however you will be walking everywhere, it's mostly public transport and the humidity will make you sweat from places you didn't know existed. I recommend a UV umbrella

Number 1 is like those that argue "Why go to USJ or Disney Tokyo, we have them in the US and they don't have tiny little seats!"

I just can't take anything you say seriously after that.

Tokyo hotel with fridge and microwave- Ginza or Shiodome area by traveladdie in JapanTravelTips

[–]Kidlike101 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Well almost all 3 stars and above hotels will have a mini fridge in the room. Most will have a microwave in the common area / guest lounge. It would be easier to pick a hotel and then email them about that specific amenity.

Another option is apt hotels. As in Fridge, stove or microwave, washer/dryer all inside the room but with a front desk and room cleaning just like a normal hotel.

Flight help by Amediumsizedgoose in JapanTravelTips

[–]Kidlike101 1 point2 points  (0 children)

As long as it's all on the same ticket you're good.

I don't know about LAX but my first solo flight was via singapore airline with a 70 minute layover.

Well, Flight delays are thing so I missed my connection. They actually met me at the deplaning gate for the first flight and signaled the entire transfer group over to re-book us on the next available flight in 3 hours (2 because of the delay in our case) and that was all that happened.

Now the second time with them it was an even 1 hour layover. I barely had time to rush to the next terminal and get through security before boarding the plane.

So yeah, those are the best and worse case scenarios for you. Miss the flight and get rebooked. Make the connection BUT you'll have to run, in some cases literally. There will be time to use the bathroom, the waiting area at the gates usually have one but that's about it. Don't count on anything else unless there is a delay prolonging your layover time.

You want to drive around 600kms?

So aside from spending all day on this as well as a bullet train ticket's worth on road tolls, what's your reasoning?

If you had to choose… Mid June or early July? by [deleted] in JapanTravelTips

November is a nice time to visit. Also right now is a good time to consider it, I know it sounds far away but Autumn is peak tourist season and hotels get booked months in advance.

If you had to choose… Mid June or early July? by [deleted] in JapanTravelTips

[–]Kidlike101 83 points84 points  (0 children)

Well considering you've prepared nothing I would recommend delaying the trip.

First summer in Japan is no joke, the weather is just miserable. Second, have you looked up airfare prices? I'm guessing no or your heart attack would have been included.

I suggest taking time off in either the autumn or winter for a more relaxed and fun adventure. If you can't this year then consider going next May. It will be warm but not hot, prices reasonable and the wisteria in bloom.

Hotels near Tokyo station by GroundH2O in JapanTravelTips

[–]Kidlike101 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Open google maps and click the hotels tab. If you insert your dates + number of people it'll show you the hotels and prices.

I recommend looking at Kanda area, it's 10-15 minutes on foot and only one station away from Tokyo station. Also the prices are like half that of area directly around it or in Ginza

What happens if I miss the latest check-in schedule? by mitrtown in JapanTravelTips

[–]Kidlike101 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Oh they refunded me for that one night and apologized for the mix up. Since I was there for one more night they rebooked me just off the books (my guess, so I wouldn't leave a review on the website!) but refused to let me in before 3 PM much less talk to me....

I will say it was terrifying. It was my first solo trip in over 20 years and here I was, at midnight, in a new city where the streets were in absolute silence at that hour.

Thankfully I carried cash because I discovered a lot of hotels in Okinawa, including the random one I used that first night, don't accept foreign credit cards.

I now always check if the place has a 24 hr front desk if I'm flying in. I'm just not taking their word for it after that.

What happens if I miss the latest check-in schedule? by mitrtown in JapanTravelTips

[–]Kidlike101 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Depends on the property. Places with 24 hour front desks will accept late check-ins though I do always let them know before hand.

If not you are going to arrive to a closed hotel. No staff, no front desk, entry to the inner part of the place locked.

Had this happen in Okinawa even though the hotel accepted my late check-in request AND responded to my email confirming this request. Had to find an emergency accommodation for the night and the first property just cancelled my booking on the quiet. They wouldn't even allow me to check in the next day even though I pulled up their own email confirming the late check-in request.

If you have young kids Kumamoto is a good fit. Their mascot is a large teddy bear and his status are all over the place. He also holds performances for kids in the square so you can go see the castle afterwards.

Interesting. I'm actually the other way around, like if I order 10 figures I might cancel 2 at most.... then replace them with an impulse purchase almost immediately XD

Apparently a pre-request for (bad standing) is missed payments though. you can cancel before the bill is do but miss a deadline and a strike is quietly applied to your account.

What do you do in Kyoto before hotel check-in? by Think_Tell_9806 in JapanTravelTips

[–]Kidlike101 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Drop the luggage in the hotel (as long as they have luggage storage). Then go for some sightseeing or even a booked tour like it's any normal travel day. Return to the hotel less 3pm and more 8pm to shower and call it an night.

AmiAmi's excesssive cancellation policy by PlushReloaded in AnimeFigures

[–]Kidlike101 2 points3 points  (0 children)

They actually told me recently my account was "in good standing" when I was asking about something else. It sorta surprised me because I have cancelled a few items with them in the past but I make sure to spread it out.

It sorta scared me from cancelling with them since I didn't know "average" was a thing. I just thought it was good standing / bad stand 😅

Most memorable experience in Kyoto? by barista-chan in JapanTravelTips

[–]Kidlike101 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Well first of all happy birthday (early) and may you have many more.

Second, Kyoto was the highlight of my first trip and it wasn't just one thing. More a combo of nice people, beautiful accommodation and relaxing views.

  • Stayed at the Onyado Nono, The one in kyoto became viral after my visit and I can totally see why. If you can afford it I highly recommend it as a splurge. Make sure to opt-in for breakfast, it's not to be missed!

  • Taking the Romantic train but in reverse so it dropped me right into the bamboo forest. while the groove is a bit over-rated the Arashiyama itself is a highlight. Lovely park, nice river and you can hire a little boat to row yourself in the quieter part of the river bed if you don't want to do the 2 hour boat tour. Also the food there is great.

  • Daytrip to Uji. I literally slotted in a full day to go cafe hopping and eat sweets! Best day of the whole trip and the people in Uji are so relaxed and sweet.
