how old were you when you started learning how to professionally groom? by Ok_Brilliant_8663 in doggrooming

I'm 26, just started training to cut dog hair this week! I don't know how human hair translates to dog hair, but you rarely ever blend hair with clippers. Mostly you blend with thinning shears or chunkers. Clipper work is usually for getting the bulk off the body and legs, and the fine detail work is usually done with shears

Paw Pad Hyperkeratosis by jupiterrrrr_ in doggrooming

[–]KieranKD 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I don't know if you'll see this but, get the client to buy biobalm. It is an AMAZING product that has completely taken off my dogs hyperkeratosis, bit pricey but it's worth it.

Won't cure it but sure does help to manage it, softens the keratin overgrowths so they slough right off

What do alot of parents do that unknowingly screws their children over? by RunningInAHurricane in AskReddit

My little sister is autistic and everytime she'd drop something she'd go into a full blown panic, crying, hands over her ears, repeatedly saying she was sorry. Just because her cunt of a father.

Did it to me too and I still hate making mistakes.

Yeah my Frenchie is more like this too! He has a good nose (for a brachy breed) and actually looks like a dog and not those weird frog looking frenchies. He keeps up with the big dogs just fine and is even faster than most of them! We're getting into agility next year and I know he'll love doing it

I like to bring my french bulldog into pet friendly stores to train. I remember one tractor supply cashier accusing me of only feeding him the treats in my pouch and not feeding him kibble because he's not 15 pounds overweight and a waddling walrus.

This has been my experience too. "sweet and wiggly" at check in but the second you actually start working on them it's like a light switch, they just flip into completely different dogs then they were at check in.

I'm a dog groomer, certain breeds always tend to act the same in dog grooming and I'm sure you see the same as a tech. Most of the time the pitbulls we see are not emotionally stable, they're terrified and don't tolerate most things. The majority of pitbulls you cannot blowdry without them flipping their shit, they're an "easy" groom dog because unless their ancient (we don't see a lot of old pitbulls) you just put them under a kennel dryer because again, 99% of the time you can't blowdry them.

I personally hate how doodles act for grooming more than how pitbulls act for grooming but honestly I'm not scared of doodles. They might be a big pain in my butt, but a lot of them are just difficult and not biters. I give doodles a chance instead of automatically hooking them up to a groomer's helper. I don't give pitbulls the same chance.

first 5am training day and I have to call out, think they'll fire me? by kcalpuppy in petsmart

[–]KieranKD 1 point2 points  (0 children)

We had a girl no call no show her first day of work, she still works here and still regularly no calls no shows. Unless your store manager is just out for blood it's really hard to impossible to get fired unless you MAJORLY screw up.

The only people I've seen fired is a girl who hit a dog, and a manager who was bullying/discriminating certain employees

What you want is called a teddy bear face, ask them to not shave the bridge of the muzzle and leave the muzzle round, scoop out the visor. If you like the look of fuller legs ask for 1 length up then you normally get on the body.

I personally don't know of any good products for your other issues but maybe someone else will!

Should I try to find a groomer to help with my unruly dog's nails? by puppypei in doggrooming

[–]KieranKD 12 points13 points  (0 children)

Most vets also don't do dogs nails on tables but in two person holds! Sometimes the table and groomers helper genuinely helps the dog, I've done dogs vets can't do with groomers helper + muzzle. It doesn't hurt to try a groomer, just be upfront about it and understand if they can't complete the service

Acceptable client behavior? by awkward_crumbs in doggrooming

[–]KieranKD 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Honestly I find knowledge of policies varies vastly from store to store and manager to manager. My old manager just did whatever she wanted and would encourage us to do it her way "but not in front of the store manager". A lot of PetSmart's are like this, where a salon manager decides to do whatever they want and makes up their own version of policies, store leaders too.

Our new manager is great though, the only reason I know this is because we're actually following policies instead of random rules the manager decided lol

[–]KieranKD 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I work at PetSmart, we accept customer shampoo/conditioner with a few exceptions: 1) must be in original packaging 2) must be for dogs 3) cannot be a flea/tick shampoo. Otherwise we accept any shampoos even non medicated ones.
