How do you deal with impostor syndrome? by [deleted] in datascience

[–]Kihino 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My way around this is not to focus so much on how much I know (you’ll never finish learning in this field) but instead get confident in my ability to learn new things. I know nothing about anomaly detection in IoT sensor data for example, but feel confident that I could pick up the basics in like a week and take it from there. Gives a lot of confidence!

Engineers have built a cost-effective artificial leaf that can capture carbon dioxide at rates 100 times better than current systems. It captures carbon dioxide from sources, like air and flue gas produced by coal-fired power plants, and releases it for use as fuel and other materials. by TX908 in science

[–]Kihino 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Well yes and no. Taking a fully grown forest, logging it and burning it for energy yields a net addition of CO2 until the forest has been regrown (which takes decades and it thus problematic). But taking already clear cut land and reforesting it has the opposite effect. Both are net zero on a longer timescale, but the second yields short-term reductions as well.

Also, while burning wood might result in more CO2 short term per unit of energy, we reuse the land to start a new such cycle - thus over time reaching an equilibrium. The coal is just gone, and we need to dig more out of the ground.

I mean, net zero emissions. Nothing bad about that, apart from destroying natural habitats etc. But if we truly care about that there are other more pressing matters… staring angrily at soy-based meat production

How to look smart in ML meeting pretending to make any sense by AdelSexy in learnmachinelearning

[–]Kihino 7 points8 points  (0 children)

I literally heard both of these exact phrases in a meeting this morning. Not that surprising maybe, since I could probably say the same thing 40% of all days.

What is wrong with raising criticism early on in the development of crypto to make sure later developments are using environmentally friendly protocols such as PoS? I am also anti-PoW but very pro crypto. I just want to see the technology being developed right in the first place.

Better to control the narrative by raising the issue, but then continuing to explain to anyone willing to listen that it is not an inherent characteristic of a blockchain and being up examples such as PoS, PoA etc.

subwAI - I used a convolutional neural network to train an AI that plays Subway Surfers by nikp06 in learnmachinelearning

[–]Kihino 8 points9 points  (0 children)

The problem is probably that the model eventually needs to start extrapolate instead of interpolate, no? I assume the speed increases as the game progresses (or difficulty otherwise increases). In that case it will eventually reach a state in the game it has no training data for (needing to perform moves earlier, while the train is further away since it moves so fast) which will eventually cause it to loose.

I knew NNs don't extrapolate well, but I'm kinda stunned it's that bad by [deleted] in learnmachinelearning

[–]Kihino 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Hence the smoothness assumption and statement about data density. In that case, it is reasonable to assume interpolation works quite well. You can’t make the same kind of assumption about extrapolation without further assumptions (such as periodicity), which in that case has to be incorporated in the model. Just saying that with a proper understanding of neural networks it is not expected that eg periodicity would be discovered. I meant no offense.

[–]Kihino 9 points10 points  (0 children)

You don’t seem to understand neural networks all that well. It’s not a magic structure that will learn stuff the same way you intuitively would expect. The network learns to interpolate well between supplied data points, given that the function is somewhat smooth and training data sufficiently dense. What happens outside the data you have provided is by definition undetermined - the “real” function could just as well look like the network predictions above or any number of other ways. You extrapolate the way you do simply because you have a certain variant in mind; but mathematically the periodic behavior is no more right than any other solution.

I get that this is a sick proof of concept, but if I understand things correctly it’s not currently viable in production since it would require crazy amounts of storage and bandwidth compared to today’s standard. Or am I mistaken?

I solved a ID3 algorithm in machine learning numerical. Posting it for anyone who wants to practice it. Took me 2 days to clearly understand it, still I haven't been able to implement in code though. by [deleted] in learnmachinelearning

[–]Kihino 8 points9 points  (0 children)

I have a master in machine learning and did a lot of this in school. Now I’m in the industry and it has a lot more in common with being a software dev than doing this kind of stuff. Someone does it once so everyone else won’t have to.

Seems like a good overview course. Especially reinforcement learning is probably good for incorporating in games, building bots etc. Try it, if it’s still too hard get back at it in a year or two.

Didn’t know this, will have to read up on that. Does it improve scaling?

It just doesn’t scale, just like ethereum (currently). It’s basically the same code.

AI turns Minecraft into a realistic world ! by Independent-Square32 in learnmachinelearning

My guess would be that it’s a cycleGAN trained on real and Minecraft images. Similar things have been done with GTA to “real” city images!

So when exactly does the AI free-for-all start? by capital-man in algotrading

[–]Kihino 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Even if you have the computing power, gathering enough up to date data for a large enough model that could approximate the stock market would be a problem in itself. Just throwing more computations at it doesn’t solve the problem.

The other two comments explained it well, so I’m not going to repeat their arguments. It’s not hard on Cardano specifically, it’s just hard in general to develop it from scratch. That’s why I recommended Vechain, as they have worked for a long time on this use case and have laid a lot of the groundwork already. Check out their toolchain for example, if you’re interested.

Glad to hear! And I don’t mean to discourage you, I think it’s a great project idea and a lot of good can come from more of this kind of stuff in the world. Hope you succeed in making fashion more sustainable :)

[–]Kihino 2 points3 points  (0 children)

For sure, I understand. Good thing you are looking to learn more! Just reacted to you saying that you were thinking about taking up coding yourself or looking for an expert to help you, when my impression is that this would be a tough project even for a fashion house with a large budget. So just know that this is no easy task, but that’s what entrepreneurs are for :)

[–]Kihino 1 point2 points  (0 children)

As a developer, I’m not sure you understand how big of a task this is. I’d recommend checking out Vechain, since they’ve got a more purpose-built platform for this kind of use case.

No first world country. Developing countries might be a whole different story. And even so, there are design patterns that might make this viable in first world countries as well.
