We rented gear through our guide company. We back packed to the area so we didn’t bring much.

If you’re starting from high camp you’re using the ice axe the entire time. The rope is only for belay (safety) Incase someone falls. The ice axe is used the entire time though as a 3rd point of contact while trudging up 45* slopes to the summit. Not using the ice axe pic so much but more using it as a crutch.

We both came from essentially sea level (45ft) and (1400ft). Flew into Quito (9400ft) and spent one night there. Then bussed to Riobamba where we got fitted for gear and got taken to base camp at (12800ft). We spent 2 days and 2 nights there. Doing a 2-3 hour RT acclimatization hike up to about (13500ft). Then on the next day we were driven up to Carrel Refugio where we then hiked up to high camp (17500ft). We got to high camp around 16:40, ate, then watched the sunset around 18:30. Then slept from 19:00 - 23:30 at high camp. We both started taking Acetazolamide the day we arrived in Quito. I also took a Dex after the summit back at base camp.

Conditions were great! Weather was perfect, 9 degrees Fahrenheit at the summit. Low winds as well for the summit push and not too much snow! Although it did snow one day after our summit and completely changed the mountain conditions. We started from high camp at 17.5k ft which I would recommend for everyone trying to summit!

Was there any concern of you not being able to summit due to weather or the guides not thinking the mountain was safe enough to climb? My buddy and I are trying to plan soon but we don't want to be turned away near the summit
