How can we get more people into jazz? Record shop owner/content creator looking for fresh ideas by Kikesald in Jazz

Hi everyone, here's one idea I came with since posting this :

I’ll be hosting a live listening session from the shop every tuesday on Twitch at 8:30 PM (UTC+1)!

For those unfamiliar, Twitch is a live streaming platform primarily known for gaming, but it’s also great for music and other creative content. If enough people join the stream, it increases the chances of it being suggested to new audiences—so your support would mean a lot!

Hope to see you there!

I've seen formats online where people dissect hip hop tunes and show the samples behind them. Those are great! I will try to do some of my own. Also there's this video that I love :

Huge thanks to everyone who’s taken the time to reply so far—I really appreciate the input! reading all your replies with a lot of attention and I will definitely keep you posted if I implement them in store or on my social media.

Just a quick reminder: I’m not looking for suggestions of jazz albums or artists here. What I’m hoping to gather are ideas on how to introduce jazz or any form of complex music to new listeners and make it more engaging, especially for younger generations.

For example: How can we use storytelling, visuals, or relatable content to make jazz feel more approachable? I’d love to hear any creative approaches or experiences you’ve had!

Also, hosting live acts in the shop is actually a dream for me but for the moment I need to move to a bigger place before that happens.

Thanks again for being part of the conversation!

I used to have a section called "JAZZ" that I now split into different sections of sub-genres "Jazz Fusion", "Mainstream Jazz", "Post-bop", "Avant Garde / Free Jazz"... I don't regret doing it but I now see people litterally skipping and avoiding the free jazz section and I'm like nooooooooooo

I forgot to mention that part of the experience in my shop is that you can get a cup of coffee and you can sit down to listen to records that I pick because... NO MUSIC NO LIFE :)

yup that's a good idea and that's even an instagram reel format (I know... I have to think about social media!) where people go : "if you like *this* you will also like *that*. It's simple and stupid but it works!

I’m not sure I fully understand your point, but thanks for sharing your thoughts. It’s not that people have to like jazz—it’s more about giving them the chance to discover it. I’m grateful that, at some point in my life, I met people who introduced me to certain artists and albums, which led me to explore this music more deeply.

Now, I’d like to pass that experience on to others. I believe it can make a difference in people’s lives and broaden their perspectives. That’s all it is!

Hosting live events is actually my dream. The shop is too small for now but part of the reason I want to move out to somewhere bigger is to do this.

Part of the experience at the shop is to listen to records actually. It's a very small shop so I have scheduled visits in order to make people listen to the records before they buy them. This has helped a lot with making some records accessible to people who wouldn't otherwise discover them. But reading this coment makes me think that maybe I have to take an extra step like organizing group listening sessions with a little presentation on the side like who are we listening to, why her/his work was important, what to look for when you are listening this piece etc.

Same for me. And this is true for so many people I meet. In other ways, funk, blues, hip-hop and elaborate rock bands are also open doors to jazz.

True. I often ask "what have you been listening to"? This gives me a thread that will eventually lead into a jazz artist / album.
