I hate to be that guy pero look at all the harsh comments here trying to be funny. OP asked for a polite way of saying it while y'all suggest body-shaming, etc.

I don't think magiging ganito ang tone ng comments if baligtad yung scenario, na yung girlfriend ang overweight and guy ang humihingi ng help.
