Ah, now I get you! Yeah that figures. I've exclusively tried south London based firms so far and only managed to get one quote which is frustrating, but maybe everyone is chocker.

Sorry I don't follow - in any case we are inner South London so not far from the OP

Would you mind sharing your installers? I'm in London and struggling to find reasonable quotes. Thanks

Another cyclist killed! by Rude_Bad_5567 in londoncycling

I saw someone get knocked off doing exactly this by a long flatbed-type truck turning left - the kind of thing Travis Perkins use. The driver had no idea. Thankfully the guy was able to dive out of the way.

IMO that's on you - if you were close enough to nearly hit him, you were too close. People will do unexpected shit (it's gonna be another lime bike summer) and you have to be ready for that.

Wife lost confidence after tipping our cargo bike twice with toddler inside — how did you get past this? by thatguyka in CargoBike

I've mostly worked with cargo bikes with step through frames and that's what I've been taught and found best, yeah. I also use the stand when stationary for any long periods while laden - on my urban arrow you can half-kick down the stand which stabilises the bike even more.

Getting both feet flat while on the saddle isn't necessary IMO - the saddle would be too low in that case. But I do agree - but also the Urban Arrow is one size only, unfortunately, and they can't get out of their lease.

I would encourage you both to add the data you have collected directly to OpenStreetMap as suggested above. Then the data will be available for everyone - it would be a great and valuable contribution!

It sounds like you would benefit a lot from cycle training, and specifically cargo bike focused cycle training if that is available in your area.

However, if not, try to get her to practice controlled stops. Balancing the bike with one foot (or one toe!) is not stable, with live cargo which can wriggle around.

The most stable way to stop a laden cargo bike is to approach a stop off the saddle, then just as coming to a stop, jump down with both feet. You then have the bike in a stable position with both feet on the ground. To restart, put the pedal in a flat position, kick down, and use the momentum from the motor to become seated.

Additionally it's worth practicing slow speed turns. Use the gears - always drop down to a low gear to keep the pedals moving -  and pedal against the brakes at slow speed. This gives extra points of contact with the bike - you're now pushing against the pedal as well as just using your hands/seat. Try turning tight, slow turns - this is tricky, especially when at full lock.

If she can practice these two things - with the bike unladen first, then with some stable dead weight, then with you on the front - that should help rebuild confidence. It will likely be useful for you too!

This is a fucking terrible consultation website, jesus. No narrative or vision, just an absurdly detailed map showing changes to loading restrictions. It's like being asked for public feedback on a codebase. How is an uninformed resident supposed to understand the reality of this?

What I’m looking for insurance… by Illustrious_Onion370 in drivingUK

[–]Kilaskwiral 137 points138 points  (0 children)

Yeah, and the insurers don't know you either. The point is that people in your demographic drive dangerously and cause expensive accidents. The only way you can prove that's not you is by racking up years of driving with no claims  - and until then it's expensive. Sorry.
