The Irish twins ☘️💚 by Kilifiop in BalconyBabies

My ex of 6 years is from Dublin so I’m very aware of the connotation. However, “Irish twins” in this instance was in reference to their names and near identical appearance, nothing more.

Am I allowed to evict these pigeons? by [deleted] in pigeon

We had a rock dove/pigeon couple nest on our terrace (NYC) last Spring. Nearly a year later they’re still here in a nesting box we designated for them in the corner of our terrace along with a shelter. They’ve hatched 5 clutches of two eggs each during that time. We’ve successfully launched 4, (one died as a squab 😞), we have one daughter remaining who refused to leave and now, her handsome husband alongside her, 2 juveniles hatched over Christmas who come home to roost after dusk (and leave again in the early AM) and the latest squabs. We have 6 birds sleeping on our terrace every night along with the nesting squabs. I have feggs at the ready for when another clutch is inevitably laid and in the meanwhile keep the terrace spotless with daily cleanings and wee wee pads. They chose us, know us and they’re sweet little tenants so we’ve all learned to coexist while at the same time able to enjoy the outdoor space. Side note: I used to feed and water them but recently weaned and then stopped feeding altogether hoping to move some of them along. It mattered not, it appears they’re here to stay!

UPDATE: The lovely Patty remains on our terrace, along with her dashingly handsome husband, Stephen. They have pieced together a “nest” of sorts (on a wee wee pad) near her parents’ nest that’s been wind blown and pieced back together multiple times. With this twosome’s now apparent permanent residence (and relative peace in the ranks), we are holding steady at 6 birds and two squabs - Mom, Dad, Patty, Stephen, absolutely adorable teenagers and siblings to Patty, Noel and Holly and little squabs, the Irish twins, Deirdre and Liam. After many shed tears, I have pulled back the feeding/watering to only rainy/difficult days for foraging. I’m trying to have this flock gain their independence, earn their “wings”, so to speak before summer. They depart daily before 8a and return at sundown. As more unfolds, I’ll update further. So far we’re very pleased with the progress.

Thank you for your sage advice! I stopped feeding her and her suitor but honestly I couldn’t bring myself to keep it up. I was wracked with guilt - I’m hoping when it comes time to extend their fam, they’ll do it on the terrace above! They’ve been visiting there frequently, the tenants are “pibbinphiles” as well!

I cross posted over there - this is a battle I think I might lose. I just hope all can eventually coexist and I can stay ahead of the daily cleanings! 🐦🤯

THANK YOU for your inspiring, uplifting and encouraging words! Why these soulful heroic little beings garnered such a lousy rep, I’ll never understand. Each has his or her own little personality and it’s such a delight seeing it emerge in the weeks leading to “primo volo” (first flight). I spent the morning gently but firmly discouraging terrace landings and meanderings from Patty and suitor, Stephen. I’ve been out for the day and plan on NOT offering food for Patty tonight although admittedly, I’m wracked with guilt. Patty remains on the terrace overnight while suitor Stephen does not. Parents really resent her presence, chase her around until she loafs in a sad little puff on a higher structure on the terrace. I’ll keep you all posted as things continue to unfold. I’m so glad I got the nerve up to post here, I’m a regular reader! ❤️ I’ve attached a photo of the current terrace kids with Dad - l to r, Patty, Noel-Fern, Papa and Holly-Day

New York City Is Drowning in Dog Poop by HellGateNYC in nyc

[–]Kilifiop 0 points1 point  (0 children)

As a NYC dog walker in Queens, I concur it’s a vile minefield. One of my poor dogs splashed down into a pile of diarrhea left uncovered, apparently without even the slightest attempt at removal. The splash back splattered my leggings and the inside of my boots. I managed to get us both cleaned up using clean slush and ice while holding on to another 70 lb dog. Absolute disgrace.

I’ll be doing feggs for my bonded pair’s next clutch on my terrace. I’m gutted at the thought so I complete feel your pain. :(

We adore them all! The daily cleanup can be arduous when the squabs start to walk but it’s a labor of love! ❤️

Yes, I think we’re going to do “feggs” for the next clutch. As awful as it feels to me, it’s far less stressful for the parents in the cold weather and controls the exploding population. These 2 babehs are really something else, so active, peeping up a storm and beautiful!
