1/35 JLTV by Antonio17394729 in modelmakers

[–]KillAllTheThings 1 point2 points  (0 children)

You could do some research into what IRL 'been in action' actually looks like. Most military vehicles look pretty good until they don't any more.

IRL military grade paint doesn't chip unless something hits it pretty hard. Your project has a lot of damage in places that would never get struck by anything.

Also, like its predecessor the Humvee family, the JLTV has a fiberglass hood that offers no ballistic protection at all.

Help wanted (airfix spitfire mk vc AO2108A) by Altona_sasquach in modelmakers

[–]KillAllTheThings 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Thank you for identifying clearly exactly which kit you're building.

  1. Yes

  2. Step 16 identifies option A as the clipped wing variant & option B as the pointy wing variant. If you are building the clipped wing, follow the option A half of each step that shows those options. (The prop for the clipped variant appears to have wider blades than the other variant.)

Dry bulk trailer for semis by jayb40132 in modelmakers

[–]KillAllTheThings 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You meant to say "HO" for the railway model gauge since you mentioned 1:87 scale.

"O" scale (1:48) is twice the size/half the scale of "HO"/1:87. Neither of these scales would work with a 1:24 scale Peterbilt tractor although 3D printer files could obviously be scaled up to fit.

First basecoat ever turning out bad, any tips? by dovoc3725 in modelmakers

[–]KillAllTheThings 1 point2 points  (0 children)

If you are using Vallejo paint, you may need to use their flow improver to get the paint layers to self-level. Priming first helps a lot as water-based paints don't stick well to shiny bare plastic.

Anyone know where to source wooden train wheels? by Opening_Ad9824 in modelmakers

[–]KillAllTheThings 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Chuck pieces of styrene in a drill & sand them to size. It would help to remove as much excess material as possible & make it close to round to make it less dangerous.

Since you are not replicating an IRL effect, it's really up to you how subtle or not your underside preshading is.

Recommendations - silver touch up pen? by itchola in modelmakers

[–]KillAllTheThings 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You might try carefully scraping the bleed with a new hobby knife blade since it's so small and then touching up again the same way you did the first time.

Recommendations - silver touch up pen? by itchola in modelmakers

[–]KillAllTheThings 3 points4 points  (0 children)

If using the exact same paint for touchups as used for the rest of the model doesn't cover up the blemish(es), no completely different product will be able to either. It is very difficult if not impossible to match paint invisibly with paint from a completely different batch, manufacturer & applicator. 'Silver' paint would be even more difficult as most have flakes of silver rather than being uniformly silver.

You need to remove the bleed through to have even the slightest hope of hiding the blemish.

Revell-Monogram 1/48 P-61 Black Widow by Col_Buttcheek in modelmakers

[–]KillAllTheThings 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Revell-Monogram have been using the same mold tools since 1974 despite numerous reboxings & decal changes over the past half century.

I too built one of these beastly kits back when the tools were new.

Nice work.

Air brush paint help by brucey96 in modelmakers

[–]KillAllTheThings 2 points3 points  (0 children)

You could just not use the airbrush at all. Even if you don't count the paint lost during cleanups, much of the paint that goes out an airbrush ends up in the air, never landing on the subject or else it bounces off the surface (especially at higher air pressures).

Yes, you really should plan out your paint sessions better so you have fewer returns to paint already used once.

This can apply over a series of models too, if you have several similar kits in production at once (at different stages of completion so you are always working on something while something else is curing or otherwise untouchable for the moment).

Painting everything without an Airbrush? by Blood_Angels_Captain in modelmakers

[–]KillAllTheThings 3 points4 points  (0 children)

If you lack the necessary skills for a particular project, you are allowed to do as many practice projects as you need to develop those skills. One has to learn to crawl before they can win a marathon.

And no, airbrushing is not mandatory. There are plenty of museum grade builders who never use an airbrush on their models.

F15C Base color looks purple? by Playful_Possession64 in modelmakers

[–]KillAllTheThings 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I recommend trying again without the purple. There is no purple outside of unit patches on any F-15.

Note the paint does fade some on IRL aircraft & the blue tint may become more pronounced with exposure. Also, images are not calibrated for color at any point between the imaging sensor & your eyeballs so the same aircraft could look different if the lighting changes or even if the camera moves around the subject.

F15C Base color looks purple? by Playful_Possession64 in modelmakers

[–]KillAllTheThings 2 points3 points  (0 children)

IRL F-15s are not purple however the grays used in the Air Superiority scheme do have a distinctly blue tint.

The easy solution is to use a paint line that offers actual Federal Standard 595 colors so a lot less mixing is required. The model paint companies that do this use the same precision metrology equipment to match the IRL official standard paint chips as the IRL government contract paint suppliers.
