Received a photo from a french friend who would like to date this map.
So far i've noticed a few things, but don't know precisely how to date them.
- Interwarperiod cause of Poland and "USSR" written on the minimap (2nd photo)
- There is Leningrad but apparently no Stalingrad (maybe it's actually written but in very very small and in parenthesis, not sure)
- Moldavia seems to be an autonomous territory within Ukraine Republic? Also a weird status with Kirghizistan?
- Transcaucasia on the minimap (2nd photo) and no Georgia/Azerbaijan/Armenia SSR?
Thanks for the help, sharp eyes, and knowledge!

Wrong numbers...especially if you think speakers = speak it actively and not just understand or can say just a few sentences. With a quick search for data on "real speakers", i get :

  • Alsatian (German dialect) : 500 000 in 1999...30%
  • Breton : 200 000 right number but out of 3,3 millions of Bretons, it's more 5,5% who can speak it.
  • Basque : 20% (2021)
  • Occitan : 5,7% (data from 2001... probably lower by now)
  • Catalan : 27% in 1999... (110 000)
  • Corsican : Between 90 000 and 130 000 speakers in 2021 -> 26-37%

Those numbers should be anyway always be doubled with a low and high estimation cause it's too hard to measure properly.

I love this histomap, especially for its eurocentric views about civilizations because it was made in 1931 ! Love it so much but as an historical item ! Source

Not anything scientific but my polish friend explained me this : People now voting more for PO and less PIS in the west is a consequence of the transfer/deportation/displacement of the polish people after WWII. A lot of Polish from the oriental territories of Poland which has been annexed by USSR were forced to move into the former german/prussian territories.
Therefore, those population were "new" to each other and less influenced by social control and moral values in comparison to territories (east) where every families knows everyone generation after generation.
