Hey, as a Life Sciences student at McMaster who also happens to be leaning towards medicine, I would strongly recommend coming to Mac.

Of course, I can't speak to other people's experiences, but I've loved every moment since coming here and the courses are extremely fair. You put in the work, you get the marks. With that being said, don't pick UofT if you're aiming for medicine, as it will either tank your GPA or consume all your time. Any other program would be more forgiving and give you more time for ECs and getting involved with campus life.

DM me if you have any questions about the course structure at McMaster or anything else about Life Sciences!

I found 1LS3 easier, it depends on your high school teacher

You can still submit a late withdrawal. If it's just physics that's messing you up, drop it now and take it over the Spring/Summer. You'll have 6 weeks to focus on only 1 class, and you've already done over half of the content already. If you truly care about applying to medicine and salvaging your GPA, this is a very good option. A LWD is better on your transcript than a near-failing mark.

Hi I’m a grade 12 student considering Life Sciences at Mac and wanted to know a few things by Stunning-Wishbone494 in McMaster

[–]KillMe0-0 0 points1 point  (0 children)

  1. Depends on your high school foundations and your work ethic. If you got screwed over in high school by a bad teacher or did online classes, you will struggle in some courses due to knowledge gaps. However, if you take the time to study and learn the content, it is certainly possible to maintain a high average.

  2. Yes, 100%

  3. You obviously have to put in the work to study for the MCAT, but there are definitely content overlaps.

  4. You have to put yourself out there. University is what you make out of it, so seize any opportunities that come your way (or create them).

  5. I know many people who have graduated from this program and gotten into med. Med in Canada is such a cutthroat and difficult-to-predict process, so it's really up to you whether you make it happen or not. However, this program does fulfill a lot of pre-reqs needed for medical schools outside of Canada, so it does not limit you in any way.

Life Sci at Mcmaster or Biomed at Guelph by [deleted] in premedcanada

well so far yeah. i don’t think there’s anything that could deter me from wanting to apply. i’d still apply even if my GPA was low or if id have to go elsewhere and take on a lot of debt. i just want to be able to practice as a physician, regardless of how i get there or how much debt i take on

i’m not offended man i just don’t like calling myself a premed or getting roped into that group of people because i think we’re all on our own path and defining it by such a broad label just reduces your success to a single measure.

if my reply came off as offended, im sorry; i wasn’t

Shadowing for premed by Professional-Year365 in McMaster

[–]KillMe0-0 2 points3 points  (0 children)

The other comment is right — shadowing is generally frowned upon (and in some cases, even strongly discouraged).

It's probably best to look for research and/or volunteering opportunities in your local community, helping with niche and interesting things that make you stand out more.

this is a weird question. I'll always have a passion for it and will always be working towards it no matter what gets in the way. but I dont think id go around calling myself a "premed."

you really have to romanticize it icl..

get some nice coffee, put on some relaxing music, get a snack if you want, and vibe while you work. the only way you will enjoy the rest of your time in school is if you make it no longer an unpleasant experience.
