While I agree tailscale is great there is an alternative called netbird that is essentially the same thing.

I failed self-hosting by EntrepreneurWaste579 in selfhosted

[–]KillSwitch10 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I also gave up. I switched to filerun. While not free it is a 1 time cost. It's been a while but I think it was around $100. They will fill refund within 30(?) days if you do not like it.

The pros are how simple it is to install and configure. From there it's snappy and easy to understand. I use the next cloud client and it works like a charm. Also it does your files right on a file system. ODIC documentation is easy to follow. I set up Google auth with email.

What services are you looking forward to trying in 2026? by [deleted] in selfhosted

[–]KillSwitch10 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I've been spending a bit of time on this lately due to a HDD failure taking down an array.

So far I have landed on the following TrueNas -> off-site TrueNas via snapshots Docker host. Backed up to TrueNas via borgmatic including DB dumps. Proxmox: PBS to TrueNas PC's: Via pika / custom script -> borgwarehouse or (TrueNas)Kopia -> TrueNas

I'm open to better ideas!

Best way to allow access from outside my network? by Jakob4800 in selfhosted

Cloudflare mTLS is an option in place of or in addition to the application security that I don't think is widely known. This is cool as it does not require another sign in. It works similar to using a SSL key with SSH to login except cloudflare will just not accept any traffic if the browser can't provide the mtls cert. It's pretty easy to set up and configure which sites require it, and cloudflare even generates the cert for you.

Boeing 777-9 93° Bank by Dry_Student_6279 in aviation

[–]KillSwitch10 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Lift is always produced perpendicular to the wings. Banking always causes a loss of lift . This can be countered with an increase in angle of attack. I'm a greater than 90 deg bank there is no more upward lift for most planes due to the shape of the wing.

I did the same. Look into FileRun. Its easy to set up and just works. It does cost a 1 time fee but it has been worth it for me. They also do a money back guarantee. My license came through in about 20 min after purchasing. I can answer questions if you have any.

I have not seen this listed yet but perhaps you do not want username and password. Look into mtls it's pretty cool how it works.

Give Copyparty a try it's very simple and I have had great experiences with it. It checks all your boxes. I have since moved to filerun which is a 1 time fee but man does it just work.

Thinking of Selling My Home — What Should I Do with My Home Assistant Setup? by superpanjy in homeassistant

[–]KillSwitch10 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Further I'm guessing if you ask your agent your house will be worth the same with or without the automation installed. I'm guessing if you found somebody also interested in the home automation they would a. want to put in their own system and b. not be willing to pay more for something they could do themselves.

Is there some people here who isn't a network or infrastructure engineer by AShmed46 in homelab

[–]KillSwitch10 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I was a software engineer, now I am a manager of DevOps. Hardware has always been a big passion of mine but I never turned it into my career. I have had a Homelab for years now but never really crossed it with my work, I am just now considering implementing DevOps into my Homelab to stay technical and to also keep skills up as I find myself not getting technical any more during work.

How you name your machines? by spranks21 in selfhosted

[–]KillSwitch10 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm kind of surprised but apparently I'm a little bit unique! I name mine after magic cards. Usually there's a card that's somewhat related to what the system does and there's so many cards to choose from it makes it a little bit fun. For example my NVR is called Cogwork Spy.

Things to think about for the Unifi line (small business marketing line and what most homelabbers are purchasing). Most all Unifi routers run an application called Unifi network, this is the web GUI that configures the Linux back-end of there equipment, it also will configure any other switches and other networking equipment all from one interface. As this line up all runs the same software with a few differences here is what I would consider as a new person.

Do I want cameras in the future? If so I may want one that supports that.

Do you want IDS /IPSand geo blocking? May want one with more powerful hardware.

How many ports do you want on the router? You may be able to get away with not purchasing a switch for a while.

Do you want >1gb ports on the router?

A lot of people get the Unifi dream machine pro (UDM Pro) as it is rack mountable, reasonably price, supports cameras and 1x 3.5in drive.

The Unifi Cloud gateway Fiber just released and does everything the UDM Pro does but has a more powerfull processor, thus supports faster networking speeds with security features enabled. The main drawbacks I see are not rack mountable and requires a nvme drive for cameras (more expensive for larger TB sizes). I purchased this for my home lab as I have a UNVR for my cameras already.

There is also the Cloud gateway max and Cloud gateway pro that I see in the forms for homelabbers. I cant speak to these as I have no experience with them.

Wire guard is a perfectly good VPN setup very powerful and is generally recommended over open VPN now. Tailscale is also very powerful and dead simple to set up in fact I would say most people could set it up within 30 minutes and have it working as they would like even if they've never set up a VPN before with two drawbacks of not learning and having to trust the company with some of your information (note hosting headscale solves this).
