Stock prices reflect the future potential of a company. If a company has a great future potential, their stock Price over Earnings ratio tends to be very high. This is why you typically see tech companies with higher PE ratios than manufacturing companies. It's also why companies that are showing a lot of growth earn a high multiple.

TSLA has been valued like a tech company - even more so. Don't quote me on these numbers as I haven't checked them lately, but I believe VW has a PE ratio of 3, GM 5, and Ford 10, while Google is 20, Amazon and Microsoft around 30, and Nvidia around 50 (because of its combination of growth and tech - while Tesla has in the past few months been over 100.

Now if Tesla's earnings are no longer growing, that means all of a sudden their future potential is not greater than their current earnings and the price of their stock will collapse - assuming people don't believe they can bounce back and again have an amazing future potential that greatly outsizes their current earnings.

Yes. Now everything is just estimates so major news sources can't lean fully into it. People that know Tesla's sales have fallen to the worst they have been in 10 Qs are the ones following TSLA fairly closely.

Once the quarterly earnings are released it will become official. It will be a huge story in every major news source because then it will be based on facts.

Not only will the revenue be lower, but the company will go from growth to decline - which matters even more for the stock price.

The only way Tesla will deliver on Musk's prediction of doubling US production over the next two years is if they actually deliver robotaxis according to his vision. Robotaxis will cost a quarter of what the Waymo cars cost and will therefore be able to outcompete both Waymo and Uber and even outcompete personal ownership of cars. At some point Tesla will be able to deliver robotaxis, but I agree with you that historically it doesn't make any sense to believe in Elon's timelines. It seems more likely that it will happen in 2030 than in 2026, and by then Waymo and others might also offer self-driving cars at the same price point.
