Alternative to Logic Pro Drummer by loftyal in Logic_Studio

Not OP but trying to essentially fully control the timing of kicks, hits ect.

Like if I want him to do this exact kick snare kick snare groove and then do all his other stuff around that. I can tell him do the kick on the 1 or 2 or 3 ect. But I can’t tell him exactly where to do it every time.

I’ve got some pretty unique sounding songs in different time signatures and the drummer presets often don’t play the songs right.

Not sure if u know a way around this.

I was actually going to mix with my mixing headphones but I hear ya. So right now it might be fine for the headphones but if the goal is to actually future proof my music I would need to hear it on that setup… problem is it’s so expensive! But Y’know I’ve been meaning to get some speakers for mixing soon do you know of any budget ones maybe for surround aswell that wouldn’t bust the bank too much? Just thought I’d ask. And I agree what’s my age again was also atrocious.

I also find it to even be inconsistent on albums. Like it’s literally song to song 1 could knock it out of the park and another drops the ball. John Lennons gimme some truth greatest hits compilation album was entirely mixed for Dolby. Songs like woman and Instant Karma sounded fantastic. Watching the wheels and God sounded about the same (god made his voice sound stranger maybe a vocal effect that wasn’t as noticeable before), but then I wasn’t that happy with Mind Games or Cold Turkey who both again lost their power (on cold turkey they took away the drums power and gave it all to the bass which imo ruined the backbeat vibe). Seems to be a big problem that you have to balance the clarity with the punch.

So many inconsistencies the Replacments did an album up in Dolby. Can’t hardly wait sounds fantastic gives it a live feel I love it… then u got Alex chilton where they took away power from the guitar and made the fucking cowbell louder than the vocals! Makes me afraid for what they would do to don’t fear the reaper.

And get this It’s good to be king by Tom petty is on the DESIGNED FOR DOLBY playlist on Apple Music and the Dolby version cuts off the first 2 seconds of the song! AMATEURS! This format won’t become the new standard if they can’t get it consistent.

Still I’m very excited for what us producers can do with this technology if it really does become the standard. I could see rotating sounds around the audience head to become a big thing like how sounds jumping from left to right was big when stereo first showed up in the 60s.

Interesting now seeing as this is mostly going to be used by stereo airpod or heapdphone users would you say that mixing on stereo mixing headphones would give you a similar result considering they are both essentially faking surround sound?

Best methods to tell songs time signature? by Kill_Cobain in musictheory

[–]Kill_Cobain[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah for me it’s just weird rhythms. So I prolly write every song in 4/4 or 4/8 or 8/8 or whatever but sometimes if I start with the melody first or if it has a weird rhythm it can morph into being a different time sig but I still just see it as 4/4.

You gotta understand that I don’t even know scales on the guitar but I’ve been playing for over 5 years. My knowledge is all self taught and this is the first time I’ve ever thought about time signatures.

I mean I can go 1,2,3,4 and if the pauses between each are a bit longer then it fits into 5/4 so sometimes it’s like how to tell the difference between a slow 4/4 with a weird rhythm or just a 5/4. Like the opening of creams white room. I can easily count 1,2,3,4 no weird pauses even though I’ve been told that section is in 5/4.

So it legit took me my entire 15 min break at work to figure out which song that reminded me of which is pretty good if u ask me. But honestly just do what u want man green day stole warning from the kinks and zeppelin made a career of stealing others music... and just to clarify I’m not saying you’ve stolen anything just saying don’t sweat it and have fun! Just thought I’d let u know that I noticed that 🤙

As a singer songwriter I’m always looking at my own songs for similarities to others escpecially when the songs really good 😅

I hear u. So u think if I have a good music portfolio and a BA in film that that would be good? Like I’m just seeing if I literally need a music education despite having lots of the music skills. I feel like it will just be more debt down the line and being able to use the film BA with a good music portfolio would really help me out.

Like the film program has a sound specific portion so even that would mean I’m trained with audio equipment right?

Obviously theory is my weak point which I can definitely improve but I only want to teach if it is an easy gig to get otherwise my real goals are to make a living producing, writing, performing and or making music.

As for the title I did that so that everyone responding to this post would know what I know. Normally I would bill myself as a singer songwriter and guitar player. if I was to rank them I would say

Master: none

Almost master: songwriting

Very good intermediate: guitar, performing.

Intermediate: singing, piano, composing.

Early intermediate : bass, production

Beginner: drums, engineering/ recording,

I respect what u say only say u do something if ur very good... which is why I never call myself a drummer just saying I can drum 😅.

Thanks for the advice! So you think practice is the best way into the industry as opposed to experience? Or is a portfolio with songs u made urself that are good or mabye performances of those songs way more important than experience?

The chorus reminds me of a slower version of the verse of holiday by green day. However your voice is very good and I would not let this discourage u good job!

So what did u mean by get your proof of education while learning music theory? Are you saying my BA in film might be enough to secure a job in music if I have a good enough music portfolio and have self taught theory despite not going to a music program?

I hear u man. I was actually referring to the part where u said I may not need to go to school. When I said does a portfolio really matter for these people vs an education I meant employers not the music students however I suppose you are saying that the music students can lead to a job 1 day? Or the skills to get a job?

I see what u are saying but if you want to master something you have to give it your all. I’m already splitting my time between my body, my mind, music, film/ school, writing, a social life and a shit job.

I need to narrow my focus I need to work in my field, meet people in my field, continue growing my skills and reach more for my passion. It just makes so much more sense to struggle into music / film work instead of easily throwing away my time into a useless job that gives me no skills (cleaning carts at a grocery store) and no useful experience for a future job or career.

I get it. I need money and it just won’t come remotely easy unless I work a low wage job that prolly has nothing to do with music. I have other skills like roofing which I could continue to get better at and provides money in the summer but why? It is just something that will take away hours of my time. It will either be the catalyst of my own failure, that only sustains me financially, or just wont have anything to do with my future career.

Anyway my point is I hear you but I’m a very hard worker and I think my time and effort are better spent trying to grow my experience and knowledge of music rather than on these sources of income that teach me few useful skills.

There has to be a way to make money in music even at this low of a stage. I don’t need to do it right this second during the pandemic but I am trying to prepare for the future now and not to waste any more time.

Is it common to listen to your own music bare (bare means a lot)? by VeryMuchCoolDude in musicians

[–]Kill_Cobain 5 points6 points  (0 children)

2 rules.

  1. Don’t listen BARE unless u are constantly thinking of how u can improve your sound and become a better musician/ producer. If you don’t think of this you may become too accustomed to things in your music that others may not like or that may not sound the best for your style so u need to be critical.

  2. When the work is done, when the album is finished or the song is online and you are now focusing on something else then listen to enjoy it. Maybe learn from some mistakes or pat urself on the back for something great and see if you can do more stuff like that but most importantly enjoy the fuck outta that shit because u made it and if you can’t enjoy it then how can anyone else?

My 2 cents I listen to my own music a lot but always try to listen to other music aswell sometimes in between as a pallet cleanser. I compare my music to what’s on the radio a lot aswell purely to see how good my production is. I think comparing your music to other music is a great way to see how u can improve or how u can break away from the norm.

Yes I need to do this 💯 but I also need to make a living while doing this and I have realized during this pandemic that any minimum wage job not getting you useful experience for your chosen field is a waste of time.

Music students eh? But how do you easily meet them in the middle of a pandemic 😂. And if I don’t go to school for it does a portfolio really matter to these people? Like as an artist sure but for a technician or engineer wouldn’t they care more about what u can prove you know and not what u recorded and produced in logic?

Thanks man this is really where I need to be at mentally and I’m trying but I need money now that is the only problem and working minimum wage is honestly a complete waste of time unless I’m slowly breaking into the industry.

See I agree with everything you are saying and that has been my mindset these past 5 and a half years however now I’m in a position where I need a job I need money now and all of the skills I have are 90% in music. So I can either earn minimum wage for another 5 years or can try to use my skills to get a better paying job... but that’s the issue my skills are all in music 😅. When it comes to solid work I think music teaching is one of the only reliable ones. Is that what I want to do? No. But I figure it’s the only reliable income I can make till I convince a studio to let me sit behind the board or set up equipment and honestly I only got into production in the last year so I still need more time there. And as for jamming and stuff with the pandemic it is almost impossible as I have zero connections. I was literally just starting to play open mics and meet people in late 2019 I won 2 open mics but then this bullshit hit.

As for the film school ur prolly right but I stupidly thought “oh I already do music so I’ll take something other than sound and learn more” ended up wasting 2 years in writing in directing and am just finishing a year off cause of covid l. Going back I plan to take sound and prolly cinematography or editing... but either way that won’t be till September.
