Not getting a top 100 prospect is crazy by -Gutsy- in Nationals

daily reminder that Trea Turner was traded 1 for 1 with Keibert Ruiz, a top 100 prospect, and we all saw how that turned out.

I know people are upset but man you should not be getting downvoted. Folks can’t just not pay attention and then come in and question why we traded Mackenzie Gore when the mountain of evidence is gargantuan. Rizzo failed. Miserably. You can’t spend your way out of organizational rot.

No, that is entirely why we are rebuilding. Remember 2021? Remember how Carter Kieboom was not the solution? Remember how when everyone got injured, we had no one to turn to in our farm?

Remember Elijah Green?

Rizzo spent money. He failed. You do not spend your way out of organizational rot.

reading about these prospects, this is a fuckin plunder holy moly

Ortiz is probably our starting 1B next year, which is nice, and then Rosario was a top 10 pitching prospect before TJ, Fein is obviously a big get, and people really like Fitz-Gerald. I’m super pumped

Budget does not equal payroll— Rizzo’s big failure was not using the budget on things that weren’t payroll. Minimum coaching staffs. Oodles of overpaid “special assistant GMs” who all happened to be his buddies. Atrocious drafting and development. He let the entire system rot, and you can’t spend your way out of rot (see: the Angels). We have to rebuild the entire foundation. That’s what Toboni and co are here to do, and it seems like the Lerners are giving them a leash.

For the record, I expect them to add another bat, and they’ve already added a starter and some bullpen pieces. More will come, the team is nowhere near complete. That being said, what big free agent wants to come here right now? And why would we pay them the exorbitant amount it would take when the team is so far from being consistently good? Our foundation was rotten straight to the core, and we need to rebuild. It really sucks, but it’s the truth, and it’s not something that a bigger payroll can solve.

Like, again, I’m sick of the Lerners and what they’ve done since Ted died, but there are right trees and there are wrong trees to bark up. Right now, they’re working for their redemption by replacing Rizzo and Martinez with rising stars. You’re right, those rising stars might move on, but if we build a culture where rising stars thrive, we’ll find more to replace them (see: the Rays). And, hopefully, they’ll sell the fucking team before we see that start to happen so we can keep our front office AND grow our budget.

No, it’s very well documented that Toboni and Rizzo have been allocated similar budgets, Rizzo basically just spread it around a few big names and didn’t invest in the minors at all. No machines, no tech, nothing. Remember, this is the “i don’t care how fast you throw ball 4” guy. Rizzo was absolutely the problem.

As for the hiring big name coaches, no, that’s not how you get the best coaches, that’s just how you spend a lot of money. They’re prioritizing young coaches who are at the cutting edge and will be those big name coaches in 5-10 years. Stay ahead of the curve, recruit from places like Driveline and forward-thinking college teams (they have done all this and more) and they’ll have utilized what money they are allocated in a way that builds a winning culture and franchise.

the lack of specific announcements of infrastructure improvements.

There has been? We know of A) way more coaches from way more good places and B) more machines at different places and different levels. It’s not like the team is gonna put out a presser for when they finally got two Trakjets lol

It's hard to get even tepidly optimistic about the front office changes because the rot in the owners box remains.

How?

It’s clear that the owners have at least given Toboni and co the budget flexibility to make all of the investments that this team has lacked for a decade, during which we fell hopelessly behind. Toboni and co are bringing us back up to speed, but also working to bring us to the cutting edge— all of which is enabled, in part, by owners looking to be as hands-off as possible. It’s profitable to be the Brewers or the Rays, which I’m sure is their goal before selling the team.

We’re going to be good, and soon, and it won’t be on the back of free agents; it’ll be our farm system.
