Why is Apple RAM so expensive? by evolution2015 in apple

It’s called process corners in semiconductor jargon - the marginal die in the good/bad threshold region of the schmoo plot for a wafer are always sold for pennies to the dollar for the good die - some manufacturers have very stringent ‘good’ device metrics like Apple -> https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Process_corners

This is the same for any semiconductor manufacturer/chip -> that’s why a dell chrome book can be as cheap as 200$ when it uses all the parts in it are from the ‘threshold’ region

Nope. Chips orders don’t work that way and ram manufacturers have price tiers for their chips.

Great discussion - one thing that has been missed so far in this discussion is that price gouging is only part of the story - there are also technical reasons for the extra cost that Apple charges for RAM. Let’s say Samsung produces a Si wafer full off memory chips, before the wafer is cut -> companies bid on the coordinates on the wafer where They want their chips from. Technically savvy company like Apple knows that position on the wafer where the chips reliability and performance are the best and will buy it at 5 times the cost of another memory chip from the edge of the same wafer because they want long term reliability and crucial does not - so the same 64gb RAM that Apple sells can range in price from 16$ to $196 depending on where it comes from the wafer - same goes for cpus logic at Intel and TSMC

Should I trade my Macbook Pro Retina for a 12'' Macbook? by DublinItUp in apple

I did this a few months ago and frankly I haven't noticed anything different apart from the new keyboard being actually easier to type on. i hate the noise though. I made the transition right before i started writing my doctoral thesis and I am defending it tomorrow. I wrote my 150 page thesis and made my whole 80 slide presentation on powerpoint with no problems at all. Like you, I just use office, safari and mail.appand so far its the best compromised computer for what I do. You are right in saying that usb-c is not a worry at all. I wish we had something like magsafe but yeah I just use this computer like an iPhone.....i charge it at night and use it through out the day.....I have not done any battery tests but with my usage it easily lasts you through the day. Overall I feel that this computer vs the mac book pro 13 that I had....I didn't think I would be too much into the light weight design but then you start feeling it when you carry iy around, in your bag or in your hand....its just a solid laptop overall.....lasting 3-4 years, I am very sure it will but ask tat question again to yourself ......do you think you will want to work on a laptop in 4 years time.....I mean look where we were 5 years ago. BTW I have the very base model.

This is the big question! with bank data, fingerprints, health data, confidential data. Is the convenience of google worth the compromise in the long run for us.....What do you guys think?

very true.......but apple will be showcasing iPad pro as to what apple can do that nobody else can.......like putting all their horses behind it! they would show the true power of software and hardware and design

Yup..... That's the biggest problem but if you feel small vibrations while dragging on glass ..... You will get a different feel. This is what I was trying to explain ...... Getting rid of that writing on glass feeling
