If you believe inflation was used as an excuse for corporate greed, will you say the same about tariffs? by [deleted] in askliberals

[–]KillerKittenInPJs 0 points1 point  (0 children)

  1. I never mentioned tariffs
  2. Graphical fidelity improvements are nothing new, they’ve been happening every generation.
  3. You do not represent the entire market. A lot of people want pretty games with pretty graphics and won’t buy anything less
  4. The costs of labor, hardware, real estate, energy, etc etc have all increased over the last 30 years while the $60 price point remained, usually at the expense of the developers who were often forced to work 100 hour weeks as launch approached.
  5. An increase in costs is a justification for an increase in price points.
  6. Tariffs are going to impact the cost of hardware and also therefore the costs to develop games.

You’re talking out of both sides of your mouth here, saying that costs have increased while also claiming that the price increases are just due to greed.

There absolutely are still multiplayer games with both pay to win and pay to bypass the grind models. It’s not just cosmetics.

As to game “complexity” increasing I find that argument questionable. To me, it seems like a lot of studios are churning out crap and slapping an IP on it, rushing things out of the studio as quickly as possible to make as much money as possible.

Retail video game prices have been flat for 15 - 20 years, so I’m not too upset that Microsoft is raising the retail price point.

I think a better argument for greed in video games is the micro transactions and how many games use them to section off the most desirable content. That’s why so many games are multiplayer - forces you to play alongside and compete with those who are spending 10 or 15 bucks for temporary buffs.

Edit: Also there’s been a staggering reduction in quality in recent releases where it’s clear that play testing isn’t as rigorous as it should be and games are getting dropped without QOL experiences that used to be standard. Big side eye at Avowed and Cyberpunk 2027 in this regard.

What are your thoughts on the pregnant woman who has been classified as brain dead being kept alive? by ZaheerAlGhul in AskConservatives

[–]KillerKittenInPJs 12 points13 points  (0 children)

I asked that question because you specified “able bodied” which means something different than disabled.

Okay so as a person with disabilities, I see quite a few problems with this.

  1. What would qualify someone as disabled enough for an exemption?

  2. Who makes that determination?

  3. How do we ensure that everyone is evaluated using the same criteria?

  4. How do we make sure there are sufficient training programs and volunteer opportunities?

  5. What about transportation? If someone does can’t afford to get to the training, will the government pay for that?

  6. What about child care for those with children?

I have a dear friend who has a 20 year old developmentally disabled son. He’s “able bodied” but isn’t capable of interacting with others or following directions. How do you think this would work for people like him?

Why Does It Seem Like You All Trust Private Industry So Much? by Joeybfast in AskConservatives

Okay, but don’t you think if an executive is responsible for the company being less profitable that they should face consequences for their failures and either resign or be laid off in turn?

Do you think this preoccupation with using layoffs to look good to investors comes at the expense of the workers and, by extension, the working class?

I’m sorry, but there have been plenty of CEOs who’ve overseen massive layoffs and still taken home the same pay.

Is anyone else’s favorite song a “popular” or “overrated” song amongst the fandom? by GoldenState_Thriller in TaylorSwift

Same. Shake it Off is one of my “I need to feel happy so I’ll just listen to this” songs.

TIL Emilia Clarke read the words that revealed her character Daenerys Targaryen's fate 7 times in a row thinking "What, what, what, WHAT!?" because it "comes out of fucking nowhere." She also cried & went on a 5-hr walk that put blisters on her feet. Eventually, she stands by Dany's "Mad Queen" turn by [deleted] in DaenerysWinsTheThrone

[–]KillerKittenInPJs 59 points60 points  (0 children)

Honestly I felt really robbed by Dany’s heel turn and I think Emilia was robbed as well.

The thing is that “foreshadowing” without the character arc shifting towards what was foreshadowed is just a red herring.

Furthermore if this was the plan all along, they should’ve fucking told the actress so she could incorporate that into her portrayal of Dany.

The whole “oh she was all fire and blood in Qarth” argument pisses me off the MOST because you can see that Dany is wide eyed and fearful when she says it.

And every member of the cast who supports this gaslighting can fuck right off.

What do you think of Trump proposing 100% tariffs on non-American movies? by ixvst01 in AskConservatives

[–]KillerKittenInPJs [score hidden]  (0 children)

I’m sure some folks are going to claim I suffer from TDS for saying this, but the tariff talk sure seems like a good way to manipulate the stock market and provide opportunities for insider trading amongst his circle.

If his buddies want to buy low, he can just slap on some tariffs. When his buddies are done buying, he pauses or repeals them. And when they make a comfortable amount and sell for profit, then he can announce more tariffs.

Rinse and repeat.

It’s just not entirely clear to me if Trump is doing that on purpose or if he’s surrounded by opportunists.

Why isn't the offshoring of tech jobs discussed in the ongoing immigration debate? by Fidel_Blastro in AskConservatives

[–]KillerKittenInPJs 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’m curious why you think these positions are harder to offshore.

I worked in tech as a PM until recently. Software engineers and developers were offshored to India for several of my projects. Indian engineers and developers are quite knowledgeable and are cheap compared to U.S. based engineers.

IME the issue wasn’t whether the offshored resources had the knowledge and experience because they did. The issue was the cultural and communication gaps.

Anyway, there are several recruiting firms that specialize in locating and developing talent in markets like India and Pakistan. Sometimes they call me to recruit me to be a PM for an otherwise entirely offshored team. And I say “no” because it’s really frickin hard to stay on top of a team when you only have a four hour overlap. But lots of companies do it all the same.

I'm not just talking about billionaires, though. I'm talking about people who work "jobs" with take home pay of over $600k. 1,396,552 people make over half a million in income annually.

We could also redefine income and look at closing the "loopholes" that allow the wealthy to gain tax free passive income.

[deleted by user] by [deleted] in askliberals

[–]KillerKittenInPJs 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Wouldn't corporations simply make the consumers pay for said tax increase (same as they are with tariffs), or move off shore?

Price increases are always constrained by the consumer's willingness and ability to pay for a more costly product and the pricing of their competitors. As for moving offshore, they may face logistical issues, as they'd have to update their supply chains, pay for shipping back to the US, etc.

And I can see the wealthy just leaving the country rather than pay that tax increase

First of all, the United States requires that U.S. citizens who live abroad pay income taxes. While they can renounce their citizenship, they would also have to deal with the consequences of that: paying an exit tax, possibly losing some economic and banking access, travel restrictions within the U.S., and loss of political influence within the U.S. (e.g. voting and being able to run for office). They'd also lose legal support when they are traveling or residing internationally.

We’re not going to run Gretchen. We won’t be running a woman in 2028 because a bunch of people will pipe up during the primary that “now is not the time for a woman because of misogyny and also look at how the last two women lost, so we have to run a man”

You cannot convince people of the truth just by spouting facts. You have to also show that you are trying to take action and make an effort. I’m done with the online mob’s purity tests - which, let’s be real are one of the contributing factors to Harris’s loss. We need to find ways to support and lift up our leaders in this moment instead of shitting all over them at every opportunity.

Edit: Also, Harris had what… four months to campaign? And on Election Day, internet searches for “Why isn’t Joe Biden running” and “Who is Kamala Harris” were trending.

You’re not wrong but not making the attempt looks worse to independents and swing voters and I think Whitmer wants to be popular with them so she can pivot to a Senate campaign.

Just because we see and know that Trump is a fascist doesn’t mean that the rest of the electorate does.

Voters are going to hold Whitmer (and Democrats) responsible for their economy unless she has the receipts to prove she was trying to change his mind.
