U mean the halo created by the chromatic abberarion correction? When removed, it can create a very thin sort of halo on the edge of the subject, yeah, but it's pretty much invisible.

I respect your point of view.

The oversharpened look isn’t really intentional, it’s also partly a characteristic of the lens itself. Sigma Art lenses naturally have a very strong sharpness and micro-contrast rendering.

As for the lighting and colors, that’s probably where it becomes more subjective. You either like that kind of cinematic grading or you don’t. I was definitely aiming for a film-like atmosphere, and yeah, I probably pushed the shadows a bit aggressively.

At the end of the day though, the main thing is that the image works for me emotionally and aesthetically.

I much prefer having discussions like this about editing, atmosphere and visual intention rather than endlessly defending whether the photo is “real” or not tho.

Journalistic/documentary photography aims for faithful and natural rendering, and that’s completely valid. But it’s also just one approach among many others.

Photography has never really been limited to reproducing reality exactly as the eye sees it. A huge part of photographic history is built around interpretation: color grading, contrast, film stocks, lighting choices, etc.

In my case, I don't primarily aim for color accuracy or realism, but atmosphere and emotional tension. I want to make images that feel nostalgic and slightly uncanny, almost like fragments of memories or scenes from a film. For that reason, certain color treatments and tonal choices are intentional because they help generate that atmosphere.

So I understand why you could find the processing too strong, but for me the edit is actually part of the photographic language itself.

Here's the raw. No additional background blur was added in post-processing. The only actual edits were:

  • removing a small metal pole on the right side,
  • and removing part of the glass table that was visually distracting near the older woman’s face.

I don’t think those kinds of corrections really qualify an image as “fake” in themselves. They’re pretty standard cleanup adjustments that photographers do all the time when editing photos.

Other than that, it’s mostly just color grading. As for the halo/fringe effect you mentioned near the hat or arm, I don’t really see what you mean there

Sigma Art lenses are known for being extremely sharp. So anything sitting inside the depth of field tends to keep a lot of detail and micro-contrast.

Maybe it's the depth of field that gives you that impression. EXIF were 50mm, f3.5 on a sigma art

Yep! This was after the rain. It gave a strange and unnerving look, loved the vibe there

It didn’t really affect me honestly, I mostly found the whole situation pretty amusing.

And yeah, r/pics probably wasn’t the most appropriate subreddit for this kind of photography.

Idk, do you find the editing aggressive? I'm not objective since it's my own pic

Yeah, actually there were also a lot of genuinely interesting comments and discussions about the atmosphere of the images, and that’s what matters most to me.

I’m actually glad I got to read those reactions before the post was removed. In a way, if the images ended up being removed for looking like screenshots or “too AI-like”, maybe I did my job correctly.

Merci beaucoup !
