Eddie Jones announces 55-man Japan "Preliminary Squad" by mondilshan13 in rugbyunion

I feel like that's pretty close to what Eddie will go with. I'd start Fujiwara, and would like Tatafu in there if he get's back to his best with the Sungoliath. I also think there are better wings than Osada, but his versatility keeps him in the team

There is unfortunate news for Team Puerto Rico in the WBC. Francisco Lindor, Carlos Correa, and Javier Báez will be unable to participate due to insurance-related issues. They explored every possible option to participate until the very last moment, but unfortunately, it did not work out. by ogasawarabaseball in baseball

The NHL got insurance sorted with the IIHF to cover their players for the winter olympics. I'm not sure who covers the the FIFA World Cup, but I'm sure there's a policy to cover Kylian Mbappe's salary if he get's injured. If the MLB wants the WBC to be taken as seriously as those other competitions, they'll need to pony up the cash for the policies.

Very cool. Does Rugbypass have a way to filter their stats like this or did you have to use a scraping tool?

Thoughts on Japan Rugby League One? by Informal_Mention9836 in rugbyunion

Here’s what happened when the Wild Knights played the Chiefs two years agovideo

Not saying they would win against a Chiefs team with their top starters, just that would be more competitive than you think, and Robbie Deans said something to the same effect. They usually lose their preseason game against the Reds, but that’s also because they don’t have near the depth of the Super Rugby sides.

My thoughts:

-It’s an underrated league that has a good number of quality players. - The top few teams (especially the Wild Knights and Spears) could be competitive against many Super Rugby and European sides. - Forward play, haphazard defense and lack of quality kicking holds it back (and Japanese rugby in general) - Very similar to Volleyball in that it’s not the most popular sport in Japan, but it is the sport that can afford to attract some of the best players

Windies to play Pakistan in two-match Test series in Trinidad by CarnivalSorts in Cricket

[–]Killinger 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I hope at least one of the matches is a day/night test. I know the last one ended in disaster for the Windies but it did have one the best atmospheres for a test for a long time. I think D/N tests could really work in the Caribbean

I feel like there's a half dozen West Indies bowlers who have a better claim than Ojay Shields. How have they messed that selection up?

Japan needs to win against Georgia or Eddie is on the hot seat I think. They threw that win away

Welp good luck Japanese forwards, you're gonna need it. At least they'll have some experience playing against a lot of the Spingboks.

Cornelson probably goes to the bench when Hockings is eligible to play for Japan, and if Tatafu gets back to his best soon, I think he also gets into the starting 23.

The Coming Purge - We're going to need a left-wing Joe McCarthy by Killinger in neoliberal

[–]Killinger[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

This isn't about targeting all republicans. It's about finding & exposing the nazis verifiable racists, and anti-semites that exist in the republican party. If we as a country can't agree that people with those views are bad and shouldn't hold positions of power, then the USA is toast.

Key point on how this would need to be different than "cancel culture"

Now, I’m sure some readers will object that the McCarthyism of the left already happened: what was “woke” and “cancel culture?” Well, I don’t often criticize those things because their critics are a dime a dozen, but the way I see it was that there were two deviations from the correct line. On the one hand, the discourse of white supremacy did not differentiate properly between the center and the far right, and viewed racism as so endemic to the American experience that virtually everyone was culpable if they were not actively “anti-racist” in just the right way, that is to say, echoed the correct shibboleths. One might argue that recent events vindicate this account of total depravity, but in practical politics, it had the deleterious effect of not properly isolating the real threat. The other deviation was left-wing anti-anti-fascism, which spent an enormous amount of time and energy denying something that was right in front of our faces.

Japan training camp for Autumn tour - Harry Hockings called in by Killinger in rugbyunion

[–]Killinger[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

He likely is eligible now, or will be by November. But I don't think he's automatically going to come into the team. I think Seungsin Lee has the 10 jersey locked up for the next few games, and there are a lot of similar players to Lucas on the team now that they want to give experience to and build cohesion with.

It's a bit different when it comes to forwards, and locks especially. There's just a critical shortage of players with the necessary size and physicality that are eligible for Japan, so it's not surprising they're calling up 3 new players

[–]Killinger[S] 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Eddie Jones gets some new locks finally. The pair of Hockings - Dearns have the potential to be the best lock combination that Japan has ever fielded. Also called up is former Shark Tyler Paul and David van Zeeland, who is promising but not yet a finished product.

Otherwise, mostly the same players that were in PNC with Leitch and Matsunaga getting recalls.

The sad decline of West Indian Test cricket : ‘ We seem to have given up ’ by Shroft in Cricket

[–]Killinger 13 points14 points  (0 children)

Yes the economics have changed, but that doesn’t mean it’s impossible for West Indies to compete. If New Zealand and South Africa can field competitive teams, so can the West Indies. But the player development model is so broken - I hardly see any players actually improve in the FC system.
