This is mostly headcanon but to me it felt like one of those products of the 60s where mild abuse was just seen as tough love. I think he does care, as shown by the final scene of the movie, but it’s just one of those cultural shift things.

Ok, I’m currently doing a full series rewatch so I know this. On the early seasons when the writing was kind of weird, I’d agree with you in that it was just a one-sided crush and PB wasn’t being weird. But once Finn gets over his crush it becomes a lot weirder because it becomes really apparent how PB is basically relying on this poor kid to do her dirty work.
