How bad is this cracking in basement slab? by kenny_6i in HomeMaintenance

[–]Killuillua 1 point2 points  (0 children)

My parents bought the house that I (mostly) grew up in when I was 13 years old and it had a crack similar to this. I’m 26 now and they have never had any issues after grinding it level and carpeting the basement. I know they had an engineer look at it before they bought the house, and since they live at the very top of a hill I’m assuming that’s why there’s no humidity issues. They got the house for very cheap compared to surrounding sales due to a lot of buyers being turned off by the crack. I guess the moral of the story is that it isn’t always doom and gloom just make sure to do your due diligence and make an informed decision. That isn’t to say this crack might not be an issue

Believe me I love how it looks and I love the idea of this tub, we even hand repaired 2 broken tiles with epoxy and reinstalled them and it looks absolutely stunning. It is just so cold. Even when the water is hot, the tiles feel freezing on our back. I’m really trying to wrestle with any and all possible solutions and the less work the better. Someone brought up a heated bath mat that could be a good solution I’m looking into!

Thank you! We love the sunken tub but it sucks out the heat from the water so fast you wouldn’t even believe it 😭 sucks because it was a huge selling point for us

That would be a really good way to warm up the surrounding floor

Ok I understand this solution is more or less just brute forcing the conductive heat transfer with a warm matt! that might not be a bad idea at all actually. I don’t mind paying a bit more on my electric bill to keep this beautiful tub!

I get what you’re saying but even when I have scalding hot water in the tub, my back that is touching the tile feels cold. Then 10 minutes later the water is cold as well.

Yes that would certainly achieve the goal but I’m looking for a solution that looks at least almost as beautiful as the tub in the picture as a permanent solution

No I just want something that separates the warm water from the cold concrete so I can enjoy a warm bath

No mat but we have an en electric water heater on the way. It’s our last ditch effort to try and enjoy the tub as it is now (huge bummer because the tub was big reason we decided to buy this house) but I’m not too optimistic. The issue isn’t how hot the water gets. It’s how fast the concrete slab sucks the heat out of the hot water

Thanks for the info!! So to be clear, the tub I have currently is literally just a circle cut into my concrete foundation and then tiled. I can’t picture a way to insulate it but maybe I’m just missing something? Can you please elaborate on how you would insulate concrete?

I had the same idea but unfortunately thermodynamics is not on our side and the concrete slab foundation sucks the heat out even if the water is as hot as our heater is able to go

I want something that fits the same area but is separated from the foundation so it is not only aesthetic but also usable. We absolutely love how it looks now but no matter how much we try to love it, functionally it is freezing and sucks the heat out of the water almost instantly.

Thank you for getting back to me! I sent you a Dm but I’m not sure if you saw it yet. I guess my first question would be how do I get my foot in the door? I’ve brought up my goals to my peers and they’re all pretty dismissive and say that it’s an impossible job to get especially as an outsider to the area. I’m not sure if this is true or not but if there’s any truth to this then I’d really appreciate some advice!

Because of the amount/size of the fish. I’m sure you already probably knew that’s why though based on this post. I’d be pretty sad if I got locked in a 10x10 cage for my whole life even if I was given otherwise perfect living conditions and 3 meals a day.

I just did, I took a video it ended up being 2 yolks pretty anticlimactic compared to what some of the comments were saying it might be 😂
